New nickle design and 2003 Proof and Mint sets?

Do you think the US Mint will wait for the release of the proof and mint sets to include both Jefferson nickle designs. I've been waiting to see a release date come up, yet haven't seen one posted.
Also, why is the only place I've seen 2003 Jeffersons is at Mal-Mart!!!{#1 source for cheap imported plastic crap!}

    No they will not wait. I have received a 2003-D nickel in change, and not from walmart, so they must be out there. Still have not received a cent yet, which is different from every other year.

    The new Coin World says mint sets are slated for an early June release.
    There will not be time to include the new coins in the set. Probably the
    unc and proof L&C coins will be available separately in the autumn.

    The issue with regard to putting two nickels in the proof sets is one of packaging. All of the current packaging only has holes for one nickel. If you think this is trivial, consider that the Mint will probably sell somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 million proof sets. 1 MM Silver and 2.5 or so clad. That is way too much packaging to throw away, not to mention create new.

    Deepcoin, that is good thought! Yet, the way the government works, the price the mint charges I would not be surprised to see a set made up by rearranging the order of the coins! That should not be a major problem to reduce the insert area.

  • I don't know if you remember the 1999 situation when the mint decided to issue the SBA late in the year, but the Mint sold the mint sets, proof sets and silver proof sets without the SBA. A SBA S clad proof coin and SBA P & D uncirculated coin set was sold seperately. I believe that it was determined that the mint's actions were illegal because if a coin is put into circulation within a specific year then it must also be included in the Proof, Silver Proof and Uncirculated sets. So not only was there no Sliver Pdoof SBA collector's had to purchase the Proof version and uncirculated set in addition to the regular sets.

    I am sorry to say I think the 1999 scenario is more likely. I don't blame the mint--they could not put everything on hold while waiting on Congress. 2004 & 2005 should be included in std sets.

    Remember the 1979 proof sets with the dollars in the Ike slot?

    Nope not gonna happen.

    I already got the notice from the mint about the release of the 2003 sets because I signed up for the subscription for them.

  • The mint's not even sure if they will have a coin for this year ready in time. They said that they are waiting on the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee to pick it's members and start giving recomendations to the mint director on a design but they have no timetable in site.If a coin is minted by the end of 2003 it will most likely be offered as a seperate packaging option and not included in any of the 2003 annual sets.
