DO NOT TAKE FREE CANDY AT THE COIN SHOW !!

wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,982 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yep - Justin, my 11 year old son, just got the call from "Rockwell Rare Coins" - been in business for 12 years in Long Island (anyone ever deal with them). Rolls of silver Washington Quarters are specially priced to him today at $280/roll (roughly half price) and they have set 4 rolls aside for him. $1120 order for 160 mixed date proof Wash quarters from the 1950's and 1960's if Justin acts now.

What do you think? Should I pull some money out of his college fund for this one?

By the way, I believe Justin filled out a couple cards for the "free drawing" at a coin show he attended at a table where they gave him free candy. image

If anyone can answer, is coin telemarketing primarily happening in the Eastern US, or is it nationwide? From what I've seen and heard, most companies that do this are in the New York area and target primarily collectors in that same area.

I'm in California and I've never received a call from a coin telemarketer. Then again, I have caller ID and have talked to exactly two telemarketers in the last 2 1/2 years.

Sorry, can't advise you on the college fund. image Doing the math on the proof quarters comes out to $7.00 a quarter. It would be interesting to see if some DCAMS come out of that batch.

Anything that appears to be too good, probably is. I would be skeptical, but that is my nature given that you received the call from a telemarketer, not someone you are aware of as a serious collector.

    Good luck either way.

the trick for telemarketers is to sell to customers OUTSIDE of their home state, as this buys them time. NY has an aggressive Attorney General's office so by targeting customers outside of NY state telemarketers "gamble" that they can buy time and escape enforcement action. Also its tougher for out of state consumers to get redress quickly.

Another problem with out of state telemarketers is that they try to avoid postal laws by using independent delivery firms such as fed ex, ups BOTH to deliver merchandise and to TAKE PAYMENTS.

    be careful.

    Only if there a mixture of 1950, 51, 52, 53 and 54. But somehow I doubt that.

Morris: I believe he said 1953-63 mixed dates, whatever that means.

"160 mixed dates from the 50's and 60's" means an even mix of 61s, 62s, and 63s and (1) 1959.

I keep getting calls from a place called Atlantic Rare Coin (I think) that wants to keep selling me a "fabulous hoard of MS64 Morgan dollars from a retired dealers personal collection that they are saving for astute collectors like myself". No matter how many times I tell this idiot I'm not the least bit interested, he keeps calling me back every few weeks.

    These telemarketers are indeed pests.

You can always tell telemarketers...but you can't tell 'em much...

Ahh -- I see that I just answered one of my questions. Wondercoin is in So Cal along with me, so obviously they are calling out here. Maybe later on today I'll hear of a coin telemarketing company based in the Western US and answer my other question. image

You might take a flyer at them, only if they have a return policy that is in writing. they must be made up rolls..seeing that they are mixed date. That would get around their"original packaging"disclaimer.image

This past Tuesday several NY based rare coin telemarketers were closed down by the authorities. I think the State Attorney and Postal Inspectors. Included were New World Rarities, Marner, Historic Collectibles, US Coin Brokers and a fwe other shady operations.

If you get an unsolicited call from a telemarketer they probably got your name from buying easily accessible mailing lists that have been around for sale for many years.

Always ask for references, (ie. PCGS dealer, NGC dealer, other affiliation - how long htey have been in business etc.) A few inquiries will save a world of financial hurt!

By the way, I know Justin always stops by John Schuch's table for the free candy at Long Beach and never has anything to "fill out" or sign. I'll continue to direct him there even after this situation. image

if you get an nusolicited call and you so not want them to call back just tell them to put you on their do not call list

works for me in new york state as there are now laws if they call back they can get hit right in their pocketbooks i used to do this but

within the last year i just fealt like talking so i have done as per below

usually i now do this as i love to talk to people and when someone calls me i usually sincerely ask their name and where they live and then i just talk about what i feel like talking about

usually in 10 to 30 minutes the person has to go and hangs up and since i have been doing this i rarely get any calls from anyone soliciting anything anymore and i do miss the calls as i always take over the conversation and start to ask them personal questions

not real personal just like where do they live?
how is the weather? are they going to school?
do they have any hobbies? collect coins?
    are they feelling good today?
anything bothering them that they would like to talk about and share with me?

and so on all usually listen for like 5 minutes to 30 minutes then just say they have to go and i never ever hear from them again

i enjoy conversations and since they called me unsolicited then i always try to have a conversation with them as i figure they called me so i am going to talk about what i want to i love to get phone calls!!!!!

i am not rude or angry i am happy that they called me but i will only talk about what i would like to talk about!

    sincerely michael

i rarely if even get any unsolicited calls from anyone wanting money for anything! and now i do miss those calls!

(Tell them to put you on their do not call list and that you are tape record all incoming calls and that you will contact your state representative and
district attorney and state attorney with the tape and proceed to send them into a largest swirl of despair they have ever imagined.

That will probably keep them from calling you until the next day.
