e-gold is an investment outfit where you send them money and they buy gold in your name and hold it for you. You can then use the gold that they are holding like money

Investment outfit? or investment racket? I was reading about it on one of those sites last week, & it didn't sound like anything I would ever want to put my money in.

Anybody remember International Gold Bullion Exchange of Ft Lauderdale? It went belly-up in the early 1980s after taking investor money, buying gold for the investors and holding the gold for them in its vaults. After IGBE filed for bankruptcy protection a search was made of their vault. The "bars of gold" were actually blocks of wood painted with gold paint. There was no gold. If I recall, several hundred million dollars disappeared. One of the founding brothers of the company was killed in a gun fight, the other brother went to jail. cheers, alan mendelson
