Help me figure out how to spend my Birthday Money on a Coin!!!

I got 100 smackers to spend on coin(s) for my birthday. I'd like to get a "classic" (ie barber, odd demomination, or seated ) with a good bit of detail. doesn't have to have any luster left, i just want something that looks. . cool. (like Arco's barber half in the "under 100 bucks thread" ) and ideas on what i should look for? I plan on going to a shop tomorrow and just looking. if i see "the" coin, i'll know.

I say a nice 3 cent silver should do the trick- those tiny things are just SO cool!

Get a nice Common date barber half in VF that is totally original. I have a nice 1892-S Barber dime in F12 that I am trying to sell. The coin is choice and a key date. It is 160 though. Totally original and used to be in a PCGS F12 holder. Also a 1915-S album toned dime in VF for 42. Ask ARCO about my taste in Barbers.

Whatever you get, just make sure it is choice and original. We always talk about how eye appeal is everything in coins. Usually they are really high end coins but it applies to circ coins too. They are just as hard to find as choice MS/PF coins.

That should be enough for any of the ideas below...

    Bust Half Dime, VF-XF
    Seated Half Dime, AU
    Bust Dime, VF+
    Seated Dime, AU
    Bust Quarter, VF
    Seated Quarter, XF
    Bust Half, XF
    Seated Half, XF

Me, I'd go for the Bust Half Dime or Bust Dime. Also, I agree with airplanenut on the 3CS. I just got an AU55 that looks better for a touch over $100.

Buy what you like, but don't buy raw or odd-ball slabs. Go for PCGS if possible. If need be, NGC or ANACS are usually safe bets as well. Everything else, forget about it!!!

You can get some nice morgans for that kind of money. Don't be in a hurry. Look around a little bit. Sometimes the fun is in the search.

Please report back on what catches your eye.

    Happy Birthday!
The coolest coin for $100 smacks?
1938-D Buffalo nickel in MS-67 if you are a skilled ebayer. PCGS or NGC slab of course so you have your liquidity of resale if you ever have a rainy day. You may have to settle for a high end MS66 but these coins are so beautiful.

For the unusual how about a twenty-cent piece.

You should be able to find one in PQ Fine for $100. or less.

Go ahead and buy raw- just make sure you see the coin first

I would buy a book on my favorite series, then spend the rest on a coin from that series.

If you already have a book, buy two coins at 50.00 or so each. I would pick any seated series as they are undervalued.

    Here are some ideas.

    1. A nice Merc in 67FB
    2. A nice Seated Half Dime in AU
    3. A nice Seater Dime in AU
    4. A nicely toned Morgan in MS65
    5. A nice Liberty nickel in MS61-3
    6. A nicely toned Walker in MS65

Let us know what you get

Well, i waited as long as i could!!! Here's my take:

SEGS 1831 50c VF-30 Are there any varieties i should look for?
    1911 Barber dime, F
1866 3c Nickel--but this one is really cool as it has a split planchet and strike thru error--may be on the way to ANACS or PCGS
1996W 10c, still in the mint package
1 silver round (whenever i can, i try to buy rounds or bars becasue if the world ends, our clad stuff won't be worth much)
3 SQ's to fill in my albums

Not too bad-- i'm happy and have new beauties to look at. Almost got the 1992 Columbus set, but it came down to that or the 3c error--i reasoned i could more than likley find the columbus set than the 3c error.

if you don't need a better date, you should be able to find a pcgs or ngc barber dime in m.s. 63 for around 100 dollars.
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.
