<< <i>I would guess the buyer overpaid by about $155 >>
I would think that Lambert in a 9 for that condition sensative set should be worth more than $20. It would have been interesting if the seller started his auction without a BIN we could see the true bidding & value on this card. Instead of the buyer choosing the $175 Buy It Now price. Carlos should know about the value of this card since he is all too familiar w/ this set...jay
Jay, you may be right that it is more than $20 - but not by much based on these completed auctions check this out. Somebody got lucky on that Marino Record Breaker in PSA 9 for $13. I once opened 4 cello boxes of this stuff and there was not a sure 10 in the group. Every card had a flaw. There is just a ton of this unopened stuff still out there now and I just don't see these cards commanding the types of premiums based on rarity as cards from the 50's & 60's. I happen to love this set though and it will be interesting to follow through the next few years.
this seller always has high buy it nows. i sit back and laugh at him for some of the prices he puts up for the 87 and 88 topps football that I collect. he winds up lowering the prices to what they should have been to begin with. but some do sell that like one did. i stopped buying from him because he overcharges on his shipping. and although his listing claims insured shipping, he has yet to insure a single package he has sent to me. dslsports is another guy that charges the same and does not insure when he sends to me.
anyways, i am unfamiliar with the 85 set, but that price seems a bit excessive to me. even if it is a condition sensitive set.
Around the middle of March somebody paid $149.95 for a 1984 PSA 9 Terry Bradshaw, his last card. The pop. is only 4. This price has to come down - especially since I need one.
Don't underestimate the attraction of the key members of dynastic teams, of which the 70's Steelers are one of the greatest. Whlie that may not be the reason why this card went for a remarkable price, it's the most "logical" one.

You're right, Helionaut. Cards of players on 1970s dynasty teams (the Big Red Machine, Steelers, Cowboys) have been selling real well lately. A patient buyer probably could have acquired the card for at least $100 less, but not all collectors are patient. And, as an occasional seller, I wholeheartedly endorse such behavior.
SAHDofTwins: The sellers name is Roger. He has been a great customer of mine in the past. I was watching his 1985 Donruss Ozzie Smith PSA 10 1/1 card he had up a few weeks back. Started out at $75, next week $50. Yea a little steep not to mention the "buy it now"'s. Then the week after that he emails me wanting my 1972 Topps Football Ted Hendricks PSA 8 that i had on Ebay. So we traded straight up for the Ozzie card. Your probably right about the SH issue. $4 for uninsured SH is pretty lame. But overall Roger is a trustworthy guy. BEN
There are 11 of this card graded. 6 are PSA 9's. None higher. Difficult year as we all now, but pops will increase as time goes by. Roger has found a profitable niche in the card market. He finds years that have low submissions, submits and gets the first high grade cards. Those cards subsequently go for big dollars. In the last 18 months the process started with 1980 football, than 81-83. Those years have come down in price. We now see 84-86 commanding strong prices. Those will drop too (although I feel 85 and 86 will stay strong for awhile longer due to those years being very condition sensitive). Look for 89 Score to be the next year to show strong pricing for 10's. It's all basic supply and demand for these years. As the supply of graded cards increases and meets the demand, prices drop. That's why it's so important to be the first guy with a hi grade card for sale. I've dealt with Roger many times and have never had a problem. He's reasonable and has worked with me on higher priced items. On more commonly graded cards he is very fair on pricing. He has always discounted shipping on multiple items. Not everyone agrees with his pricing, but he always seems to make a sale with me.
Some buyers can afford to be less patient. And sometimes sellers cater directly to those buyers. If the BIN had been $25-$50 higher it still had a very good chance of selling in a BIN format.
I think sometimes we forget that most of us are economical, but to a lucky few of us, $150 is really chump change.
If this buyer hadn't taken the BIN, I know of one or two others that eventually might have. Nice card.
I want to comment on the 1985 Topps football set. I'm going to show my inexperience here, but I've never even seen a 1985 topps football card prior to this thread and I think they are the best looking football cards I've ever seen! I love the horizontal cards and I really think black bordered cards are awesome. How bad of an investment is it to collect something like this and does it make sense to buy raw cards and have them graded?
Wayne- Right now, to put the 85 set together in graded condition would be a labor of love. There is a strong following for the stars, but little interest in the commons. Submitting your own cards is always the cheaper way to go, but Grading fees alone would run over $2000 for the set. That being said, collect what you like and you'll always be happy.
The 1985 Topps football is a hidden gem. I hope to see more off this year graded and the prices to come down. I've seen the Moon rookie in PSA 10 go for over 700 and a Montana 10 go for 600 and change. I think both 85 and 86 Topps football are great. I wonder what is tougher to get in 9 or 10. If anybody could breakdown the numbers on this that would be interesting to see. I've never busted any of this product and I just don't see much of it, other than 86 Rice rookie which is everywhere. I wonder if it's common to get chipped up and touched corners straight from a pack.
