Has anyone ever seen a California gold piece with toning before? This one is in a PCGS MS62 holder. How did it develop such unusual toning?

Wow - that's beautiful! I've never seen a blue and gold combination like that - my first guess is that the copper content of the coin is higher than usual and not evenly combined in the coin, thus causing it to tone in this manner - amazing! image

Gorgeous looking coin! And, I agree with Frank on the likely reason for the color being the way it is.

I agree with FC57Coins that it would be the copper. Gold is noble and should not oxidize at all. Copper will oxidize practically the moment it enters the atmosphere, i.e. right after striking.
