Type set addition on the way home from PCGS

That neat 1818 large cent I bought raw has finally been slabbed. It turned out very well for me. The dealer and I both thought this coin was AU and I bought it for an AU price. The PCGS submission status check page says it will come home in a MS 61 BN holder image I will add it to my type set when it arrives....

I think those are VERY difficult to grade in those ranges because I can see why you would say AU. Nice looking coin

I like your's Brian. Mine has the slightest touch of red on the reverse but it didn't come up in the photo. Yours really looks nice!
  • Carl - always good to be conservative on grading, but your pix look unc to me ... nice luster. Congrats. image

    hey carl

just a question based on the scans of the two coins. what is your explanation of the obvious marks on the cheek and neck? given that brian's coin shows nothing in that area it leads me to believe they are post strike and probably from at least some circulation. i'm by no means knowledgeable about this series but the AU estimate you had sounds about right. perhaps you recieved the "swing" grade of 61.

    a nice coin nonetheless.

I was told this coin was part of the Randal hoard. Apparently it was sitting in a big container just chock full of large cents. So I think those marks on her jaw and neck are akin to bag marks on a Morgan. I was thinking there was a rub on the high points of her hair... The strike seems pretty good, especially considering the die must have been just about to break into pieces.

I just sold a AU 1818 cent but it did not have the character that one does! That is the one thing I likie about early cents are the crudeness of the coin making process and the many different variations it produces, unlike let's say Morgans.

    nice coin!

A very nice coin, still quite glossy. I can easily see the grade on this one. Randall hoard coins are cool because everyone can have an nice uncirculated one at a decent price.

Here's another coin that's probably from the Randall hoard, with the diebreak that's so common on these coins. For those who don't know the story, the Randall hoard large cents were dated 1816-1820, and were found in a keg in Georgia around 1868. Some accounts say that it was in a building that was being demolished, others that it was buried. The person who found them used them to pay a merchant, for 9/10ths of a cent each. The merchant had trouble disposing of them to skeptical customers, and sold them to New York collector John Randall, who had better success selling them to other collectors.

    Nice cent Carl.

It seems a lot of members have an 1818 large cent in their collection. Mine is below. Love the die break.

    I don't have one. image

But, I do have an 1819/8. imageimageimage

That's kind of an 1818. Except it has an extra 9 on top. image
