Some People are Just RUDE!!!

RampageRampage Posts: 9,489 ✭✭✭✭✭
I mentioned about a guy who wanted me to end my auctions early to sell to him, right?

I did the right and ethical thing and let the auctions run their course.

This person bought one coin that was not listed, paid by check, which was deposited 5 business days ago.

I get a PM from this person yesterday that was just down right rude wanting to know how long I was going to wait for a 19 dollar check to clear.

If I would have seen his PM before I mailed the coin, I would have mailed him a 19 dollar check back to him.

QUESTION Am I wrong for waiting for a check to clear if I have never done business with this person before and I hardly ever see him on the message boards? I do not care how much an item cost, so do not even flame me for waiting for a 19 dollar check to clear.

Thank you for any responses.

Rampage!

I usually don't hold checks for $25 or less provided the buyer doesn't have any negatives for non-payment on eBay, or any bad history here. I recently had a guy hold my $4 check to clear, which I think was outrageous. In his auction he said he took PayPal, and I sent him a check to save him the fees. Taught me a lesson.

When I get a check in, the first thing I look at is the feedback. If they have very good feedback and the check is a small amount ($30 or less), I'll ship the item when I receive the check. If it's a $1000 item and the user has a feedback of 3, I'll hold the coin 10 days! But for $19 I'll ship it. In all my E-Bay transactions I have not had a check bounce yet!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    K6AZ-

The person does not deal on eBay and that is why he asked me to end the auctions early in the first place, other wise, he probably would have bid on them.

I rarely, maybe once in a very long while, will I see him make A post in a forum.

That is why I hold the checks.

If I have dealt with the person before, if it is under $50.00, I never hold the checks.

There are several board members I do NOT hold the checks on.

    EVERYONE, PLEASE LIGHTEN-UP.

So what? Do you REALLY care what that buyer thinks?

Answer his question, if you have a policy concerning checks, tell him (regardless of what he may think).

If you do the right thing you do not have to worry about what he does or thinks.

  • I think holding a check is fine if it's the first time dealing with the person even if they have good feedback. If I pay by check I tell the person hold it as long as you need to because I won the coin and don't see the need to get it right away. Some banks charge the person depositing the check a fee if it bounces also, so it could cost you money.image

Marty, I have had three checks bounce on me from eBayers. One was for $28.52. I never got the money for ir, plus I used the advice from board members and mailed the coin before the check cleared.

Another reason I hold checks from people I do not know.

It's a tough call then, since you say the guy hardly posts here. I have dealt with many regular posters here, have sent the coins out on receipt of the check, and haven't had any problems. Then again, from a regular poster, you know they wouldn't dare send you a rubber check.

There is no right or wrong answer.

Whatever your policy is regarding checks is your choice. Hopefully it is stated in your auctions so a buyer knows what to expect.

In my auctions I always write that checks must clear, however, based upon other factors like dollar amount, previous customer, feedback etc. I may at my choosing mail the coins before the check clears.

Bottom line is that the check policy is up to YOU.

    Joe.

    Hi Joe.

This was not an auction. This was a board sale.

By the way, I have an Uncle Joe. Are you him? image

Even if it's not an auction, the policy is still yours. If you want to wait for a $3 check to clear, then wait for it to clear.

Rampage, your policy is your policy and no one else's. Do what you want and how you want it. If they don't like it, you don't need their money. I NEVER expect anyone to ship until my check clears. There have been some (most on the boards here) that go ahead and ship when they got the check. I was of course most pleasantly surprised and told them so in PM. But I don't expect them to ship until they get my money for sure. If you stated you would wait for it to clear, then forgetaboutit..image

Just let the person know your policy. It sounds like you withhold shipping items while a check clears. That's fine. Nothing wrong with it. That is my policy, as well. If the guy objects to the policy, tough. He should have inquired, prior to agreeing to purchase the coin. Most people won't mind once they know your policy. Good luck! image

    Dog97......I did that. image

Karl. I never dealt with them. Next time I see something I want that they have, i will let you know. image

    Cheers, Richard.
  • You are right, they are rude and wrong. Its your perogative to hold shipment until the funds clear, be they for $1 or $1,000. I hold all checks unless I know the person. Wait an additional 19 days before shipping....

I bounced a $3.00 check on a commen date lincoln cent once and it ended up costing me $23.00 before I got the cent. needless to say the lady asked me to send a money order. I'll never ever pay for another coin with a check it will always be a money order or cash for under $10.00. If they don't like to wait let them go to the post office and buy a money order. but again if I sell something that worth any $$$ at all I send the coin and make sure they don't want to return it so I guess it works both ways.

    Dog.

I will not post the poster's name because I am not trying to start a flame throwing contest. imageimage

It may be the way I took the PM (I did not even post the whole PM). To me, it was the tone of the PM that I thought was rude.

Then again, I may be wrong and just over reacting.

I will think a little more about it and if I think it is okay, then I will post the whole message without the name of the poster.

    Richard.

You don't have to post the whole message. The buyer might not appreciate that even if you left his name out. Maybe just a quick rundown of why you thought he was rude.

you should have asked them why they are still using checks in the year 2003. tell them the coin is enroute to them via horse & buggy.

I see nothing wrong with holding the check until it clears. I think you are obligated to answer his question. Even if to say it would take 7 business days before you ship. JMHO

  • Rampage - you are not wrong.

If your buyer's point is that it's "only" a $19 check, then it's only a $19 coin, so what's his rush?

By the way, as an eBay seller, I sell to eBay members only, not others ... board or no board. Boards don't give feedback ratings, nor do they give instant credibility. JMO.

I've never bounced a cheack and neverreceived a check that bounced.....have been buying/selling on ebay for almost 4 years and have sold over 500 items in that time. Perhaps I've gotten complacent as a result but I generally ship upon receipt for someone that has good ebay feedback (50+) even if I don't know them. I've done a number of Board transactions, buy and sell, been paid by check w/o problems. Fundamentally, its a trust issue. Once burned, you're entitled to be less trusting.

Buyers can ALWAYS send a MO or CC.....yes, its may cost a $1 or two but if they really want it fast, let them go to the PO, Bank or other financial institution and buy a MO or CC.

  • I always purchase by check. I think that if the seller is willing to accept a check and wait to confirm payment, the least I can do is bloody well wait till the check clears to get the merchadise....It aint tough.....
