How would a UNC but hairlined coin grade?
I was looking at this nice walker. It looked uncirculated and still had good luster with some random marks making it look MS63. When I tilted it under different angles under the light I could see hairlines all over the fields. They were not deep but very numerous. I needed a 10X glass to see them well. They cut down into the surface so I knew they were not die pollish lines. It looked like someone cleaned it with a cloth in the past and then it retoned to hide the hairlines some. How does a coin like this grade? Do the hairlines knock it down to MS60? Is it a damaged coin that would receive no grade from PCGS?

This past Sunday i saw a nice looking red 1909 S-V.D.B. Lincoln that was raw. I inquired why he hadn't sent it in yet to be graded and he informed me it was lightly hairlined. I took a loop to it and sure enough.....they were there. Not really bad, but 99% sure it would come back BB'd.
Looked to be about MS63......maybe MS64 without the hairlines considered. He wanted $1,100 for it......which was ok i guess. But i've got a PCGS MS66 RB in the works that looks full red but with mild woodgraining......so i didn't need another and passed.
Once again resides with Legend, the original purchaser "raw" at live Eliasberg auction. Laura and i "love" the same lady!
but usually not a good thing
and this walker you saw if hairlined like you say
and then retoned to try to hide the hairlines
i would say not a market acceptable coin at the grading services or even for me if raw!
and if it did get graded
i would feel really sorry for the end buyer
especially even moreso if he tried to sell it and the potential buyer saw the hairlines
