Home Buy, Sell, & Trade - U.S. Coins

NEED FOR A NEW BOARD?......I THINK SO!!!

The buy, sell trade board has become best described as a mess!!!

There are, IMHO, too many posts that are nothing more than a plea to look at the posters Ebay offerings.

I would propose that most everybody that reads this forum also looks at eEbay and knows how to search for what they want.

I first thought that this was a good place to look for people with REAL collector interests and wares that I could not find anywhere else. This has for the most part been a major disappointment.

I would like to see Coins for sale here to the forum members at what ever price or "offers accepted" PRIOR to listing them on Ebay.

(I'm getting up in a huff here now) image I suggest an "EBAY LINKS" forum and a real, honest to god, genuine "BUY,SELL,TRADE" forum where we can come and look at other collectors (or dealers) offerings.

I for one am not too interested in TTT's every 4 hours and catch messages only to be lured into an Ebay auction.

I DON'T BID if I'm baited to the auction.

GRRRRRRRRRRR. now I have to go home and beat my dog just to calm down. image

I agree. I do not buy from e-bay (but do check auctions if a title catches my eye). I have bought from members posting on the B S & T Coins Forums. Separating the two would be helpful. I would still check auction links.

I think people should list coins and the prices they want for them. If they did that then this could become a great place to buy and sell. Right now there are too many ebay announcements taking up space and squeezing out the legitamate buy/sell messages.

  • I agree 100%. I would much rather not see ebay ads in this area. If you want to sell it to a board member post a picture of your coin and price it. We all know about ebay and will do our searches there if interested. It is not fair to push out all the members that actually want to buy and sell here.

  • I am in full agreement-- As with a lot of small collectors or others
like myself just getting started, I do not have a lot of money to
put into coins. There I never buy from E-bay or other biding war
type of places that ask you to make a offer. The seller knows what they are willing to accept so why not post it and let us know if we can get in the ball game, that way we both do not waste time. I have asked if the seller would take a little less when it was pushing my limit, but if the price is firm and I really want that coin then it comes home to me.

I think sensible headers in your posts would be better than another board that we are not going to get.

FA: Blah blah blah, ending blah..
    FS: Something nice, good price..
FT: Need this, have this to trade..

Alot of members already use this, & think its a good way to advertise your intentions. Then you can quickly avoid the ebay ads if you don't want to see them. I don't believe the ebay ads pushing the regular selling/trading posts down is a big problem. I like to see what some members are auctioning, & I don't mind scrolling a little bit to catch the older posts.

TTT'ing more than once a day or so I agree may border on inconsiderate, but if so-&-so is auctioning up a nice coin, maybe has the same coin interests as me, & is a straight up member, I don't mind seeing a heads up here in the BST board.

    But thats just my opnion...

I feel that the board is belittled by linking to Ebay auctions. There is no need to promote the Ebay machine on a site geared towards serious collectors. This site is, IMHO, set up for collectors to try and find good deals on good coins from each other and dealers who are offering rare coins. This is a site for the knowlegable collector. We don't need to waste time linking it to the vast sea of Ebay where you can buy anything but your mother (as of today anyway). If a person wants to sell on Ebay great, we do, but promote it through Ebay or your own site and not here.

I, for one, do not mind the ebay ads. As long as they mention it is ebay related in the title.

I fully agree. I enjoy socializing with the members here over coin sales and buys. If I wanted the confrontational approach of ebay, I would go there to buy. I would much rather buy here, and I have had 100% satisfied customers selling here.

  • As a very recent offender, I must say that this is the perfect vehicle for exposing something at an auction site. I have only posted twice in this manner and both times the coin or coins involved were things that would appeal to a collector.

The "street market" is ruled by e-bay in a big way and the attitude "Why should I pay you a premium, I can get it cheaper on e-bay" has us in its grip.

I brought the same subject up about a year ago, I too was/am frustrated with all the ebay links, and out of all the replies there was a concensus that there would be a referenced in the title of the post that it was tied to an ebay auction. Of course, over time, new members are not aware of the discussion & old members forget. I actually wanted a new board for traders only, but anything to get professional seller off the 'collectors' board would be OK with me.

I like to see both, but as suggested, list in the title, auction, for sale, or trade. Don't look at the ones that list as auctions if you don't want to see them. I prefer to bid on auctions listed by people from the boards. Why add another place to look because some people don't want to filter through the listings.

Why not submit this question to David Hall on the Q & A Forum?

To expect a separate e-Bay forum for coins only is asking too much, I think. An "e-Bay Only" forum might have to include listings from all the other collectibles fora. Something to think about: coins, sports cards & collectibles, records, stamps, currency, autographs and the miscellania of the General Collectibles forum thrown into a single venue. Can you imagine the result?image That's not a forum I'd care to moderate but the reading would be interesting.image

I know I get frustrated when I see something that interests me listed on the BST board, click on it, and it turns out to be a link to some guy's auctions. I watch e-bay like a hawk, if I dont find it through my searches on e-bay, it's probably because I dont want to find it. So, if the seller puts in the title that his items are on e-bay, then I dont have a problem with it. That way, I dont even click on it, and no time is lost.

I've set up a poll on the Open Forum that sort of addresses this issue. Within the framework of the current forum set-up what would you delete to make room for an e-Bay Only Forum? Or another forum you'd like to see?

I think you'd find that most of the guys in the BST-Coins forum are only interested in coins. I'm sure there would be several with other collecting hobbies. But by-in-large, coins are going to be the dominant hobby. Personally, everything that has nothing to do with coins could go, and I wouldnt even notice the delete unless someone told me.

As a seller I've been frustrated in the past when I've posted merchandise here on the boards first with very low margins only to have it ignored, have people make me lowball counteroffers over my already posted best price, have people hold items and then tell me they don't need it since they bought one elsewhere (sometimes from eBay for more money image ), etc. I find it much easier to work the PMs, emails and phones when I have new coins. I may be missing out on meeting new members now though as it has been a long time since I've posted any coins for sale directly to the boards. I also do try to keep my "eBay spamming" here to a minimum.

As a buyer I don't mind people posting their links here...anything to help me connect with a coin I want is a good thing in my book.

Just my two cents...if the rest of the board wants change I have no problem with that either.

Im with Rella...im sick of practically begging people on BST to buy what they are complaining they cant find at a decent price...I list it under cost only to have i ignored...the minute it goes on ebay and link is posted, everbody seems to suddenly wake up...

Ill place one ad on here with one link, and appreciate those that do here...its a great way to track carl image

I've found it useless to list coins directly for sale on the BST board and have stopped totally. When a coin Grey Sheet bids for $30. and you're offered $16. (delivered) or a coin Blue Sheet bids at $465 and you're offered $325, it's not worth the time to list here. Whereas, I post a link to my Ebay auctions and members bid the items up.
    .
When guys list their Ebay auctions here, I usually go to the auctions and start the bidding out. I have no problems with members listing their Ebay auctions.
    .
    Edited to add
The same guys who lowball your coins on the BST boards won't cut you a break when you ask; won't sell you something at bid and everything they have is "PQ". It's very frustrating!

Totally agree about the eBay announcements - otherwise this could be a great place to buy and sell. Glad you posted inneedof70's.

In my opinion I don't think too many sellers are selling here. I see the
same threads posted over and over with the same coins. I don't understand
it. I have bought coins from two members here in the last month at
reduced prices and was very pleased. I wish we could get some good suggestions on how to make this forum a real winner to buy and sell coins. There is no reason in the world why this shouldn't be an easy commision free method of selling. I have had little success in selling my own nice looking certified coins even when I said "Make and offer". I didn't even get responses. I ttt'd a few times too. I would have thought that at least some dealers would have made offers to see if they could get them cheap enough. It doesn't hurt to make an offer. I just don't understand.

Any ideas on how to make this forum work?

A good start might be to try and standardize the posts by starting
out the title with either WANTED: or FOR SALE: or FOR TRADE: in nice
big capital letters instead of having these words embedded anywhere in
the title. It makes it easier that way to scroll down the threads and
look for the titles that interest you. What do you think?

  • I too have bought MANY coins from this board and have been VERY pleased with the price AND quality. Some have been $20.00 and others have been $2000.00. It agrivates me to no end to see "sneaky" subject lines only to show an Ebay link AND THEN it gets TTTed every hour so that legitimate (sorry) sellers are bumped off the front page in minutes it seems.

    I feel better now.

I've been able to sell everyone of my coins on here. In fact I have not used Ebay as a seller in months. I'd rather sell the coins here anyway. The key is to price them fairly. There is already an Ebay board on CU, its called the Registry Forum. image
  • I totally agree with Michael Dixon and Pontiac(Bill). I have attempted in the past to sell "Here only". There is very little activity generated. I post my eBay link and people seem to bid. I feel that if people use this board in a constructive manner and being considerate to others there is certainly room for all members. I'm a buyer and a seller. I am always willing to trade as well. It is nice to come here and be able to enjoy all three. I certainly don't prefer to visit seperate boards. Just my two cents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • stop whining guys, Nobody is forcing you to click on their links, if you don't want to read there ebay items then don't click there posts, most forum members indicate weather the items for sale are on ebay or just the board in their title

Sorry, but I personally prefer to list something on eBay and link to it here. It gets much more coverage that way (the best of both worlds).

Having sold coins "here only" before, I've found in most (but not all) cases that I would have done better on eBay. Best to cover all the bases. If it's in a different forum, so be it. Others have suggested putting "eBay" in the title so everyone will know it's an eBay link thread. No problem, I've tried to do that. Then there was "TTT only once a day and put everything into one thread". No problem there, either, for the most part.

I understand the fact that some folks don't like eBay, and that those of us who sell on eBay should respect certain rules of etiquette on this forum. However, I don't think eBay auctions should be excluded.

Didja ever stop to wonder why there are so many doggone eBay threads?

Maybe, just maybe, it's because it's the best way to sell certain items!?!

Try selling non-US coins or exonumia or something specialized like that "Here on BST Only" sometime, without using eBay, too. It can be done, but not as effectively.

  • Okay, it seems as though the forum is split. I guess if "You're in the hobby for the money" it's okay to link to Ebay. If your a hobbist, you don't want all the threads to clutter up the screen with the links.

I will follow whatever is most respected and considered curtious to others.

I will post registry quality coins on the registry forum first before here.
I will THEN post whatever does not sell there, here.
I WILL THEN add a link to the remainder of stuff to my auctions and TTf'nT when it drops down to 20th position or so.

    Any problems with that? image

  • ajiaajia Posts: 5,403 ✭✭✭
It seems to me that most ebay (auction) sellers are missing the point on this, I'm not saying & I don't think inneedof70s is saying not to post threads with links to ebay (or auctions in general), just that there should be a seperate board for that. Why is there a problem with that? If someone doesn't mind buying through ebay then they can browse that board.
If someone would rather deal with a board member directly, then browse the B,S&T board.
Maybe the board should be renamed 'Buy, Sell, Trade & Auctions'!image
