Did everybody on the West Coast get the Goldberg May Catalogue?

BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
Rest of country wil be getting copies by end of the week.

Since they just went on the net for viewing lots and bidding, what do you think of the set up?

I got mine. First and only time I've ever paid for a printed catalog. There happened to be some coins in this one that I was very interested in.image

Are the Goldberg's selling Accented Hair Potatos now??
  • dbldie55dbldie55 Posts: 7,736 ✭✭✭✭✭
Not much of interest in this sale. Only a couple lots to look at. Heritage has better stuff, although nothing great. Still waiting to see what is in the Superior sale.

Abe: Good luck with your #1 Proof Kennedy set. Is that your lot of toned NGC MS Kennedies as well Abe? If so, it must be the lot I saw at Long Beach, which was offered to me.

If you read my report on the Registry board, it was my impression that the #1 PR70 Roosie set did not fare that well in the recent Heritage sale. It will be interesting to see if Goldbergs can "deliver" for you.

Wondercoin, I think I did mention to Larry Goldberg that if my set did not do real well,

I would show him some of my gun collection and how they work.......................really work. image

I've never been a big fan of the Goldberg Auctions, but I took a gander online this am. There are some really colorful IHC proofs up for auction. Good luck on your Kennedies.
  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,982 ✭✭✭✭✭
Abe: I have not checked out their website actually. I'll just lot view in person and probably bid live at the sale.

I can see right off the bat that you must have assisted the Goldbergs with estimates. Overall, they look fairly reasonable. image

Thanks Mike. I dont know if I will attend the auction. If my stuff goes badly I might shoot my self.

If it does well I might have a heart attack. Either way, it looks grim for the little bear. image

<< <i>estimates. Overall, they look fairly reasonable. >>

    Wondercoin,

Are you kidding? They aren't even close on far too many of the coins. Quite a few won't even bring the opening bid. Just a couple examples:

1969-S PR69DCAM with a minimum of $850.00. In the current market, it's a $220 to $250 coin, so it's not even going to make the opening bid.

1972-S in 69DCAM with a minimum of $200. Current market it's an $80 to $100 coin, so it won't open either.

It's very clear that they aren't used to dealing with moderns.

Russ, just the knowledge that these coins were pawed by the little bear, should

    double or triple their value.image

Russ: I know what you are saying, but, there are many the other way as well (ex: the 76(s) clad and silver). And, I AGREE WITH YOU that the "bubble" may have burst, but, overall they did a far better job with their estimates than other "modern" publications do with modern pricing.

For example, they estimate the 1998(s) in PCGS-PR70DCAM at "$950 - $1100". Russ where would you have placed the estimate on this coin?

They are too low on that one. I'd put it between $1500 - $1800. Which, of course, proves my point that they aren't used to dealing in moderns.

Aside from that, though, I don't really care about the estimates. It's the opening bids that are the problem. Many simply will not sell because they're set too high - in some cases, stupidly so.

Boys, dont fight its only money. As to the 1998-S Pop 1 coin it should correctly have been

priced as 1500 - and up. How do you really price a pop 1 coin. It just depends how badly someone

wants to have the #1 set. As for the more commen coins, many if not most are actually PR-70 DC

qua;oty even though they are graded PR-69 DC. If they dont sell ,they dont sell. But the quality

of the lower priced coins is exceptional. I can alway leave the unsold coins to Russ in my will.image

Russ: Bear has some control over the "opening bids" doesn't he? He obviously has set them where he wants them to be. And, yes, the 98(s) is one example of a somewhat conservative estimate, while there are also some optimistic ones (and some just right).

I have personally pointed out the benefits of MINT STATE KENNEDIES as a series to many collectors I work with over the past couple years (most notably R. Green before he ever owned any). I have not "recommended PROOF Kennedies to anyone EVER. You will get no argument out of me that some of the estimates might not be achieved.

Of course, I certainly am "pulling" for Bear to do well with the set.

Bear, my catalog arrived yesterday and I also wish you luck with the sale of your set. But I'm wondering, did they allow you to set reserves on the coins, and if so, at a level where you could protect your investment? My experience in consigning to them was satisfactory, as they allowed me to set reserves on my most valuable coins.
  • BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
Strat in answer to your question, YES. I go back a long way with Larry and Ira

and they have always treated me right. I expect the high dollar coins to set records

at the auction. If Im right I will take the wife out to dinner, If Im wrong, the wife takes me

    out to dinner.

I like the on-line catalog better than the real thing (arrived today). Pictures are better. Looks like there are some interesting patterns too. Should see some interesting bidding.

    Link to online Catalog

My dealer gives me all the catalogs, unless they are special (like the Eliasberg or Bass sales). Don't see anything in this sale that would cause him to keep it, so I am sure I will have this catalog within a few days. Must be all the snow we have been getting slowing down the mail.

BTW, what kind of guns are in your collection. These sound much more interesting than any kennedy.

I believe in doing a thorough job. A 22 Cal will kill you, but it will take a period of time.

Actually it is only used for target practice.
