The PSA 5 T206 Wagner

Does anybody know anything about the PSA 5 T206 Wagner? The PSA 8 card is always being discussed but I have never heard any mention of this card. Is the card in a private collection? Was it ever offered for sale?

Can't say as I know off the top of my head. My recollection is that one of the PSA 4 VG/EX cards was sold by SportsCards Plus for approximately $325,000 a few years ago.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • The former CEO of Pacific Trading Cards, no longer in business, has one of them.....I want to say he has the PSA 5.....but it might be the PSA 4.

One of the true gentlemen in the hobby reminded me tonight that the PSA 5 Excellent Wagner card was in the personal collection of none other than Bill Mastro himself.

There are still a few important, decent high-grade [albeit ungraded] Wagner cards out there. I know that the Baseball Hall of Fame has at least one....I do not recall if that was Barry Halper's or not. I also do not recall off the top of my head anything about any of Larry Fritsch's Wagner card(s).

Also -- many of the collectors who own Wagner cards have had them for well over 20 years -- long before the concept of graded cards became significant in our hobby.

MS - The last time I made it to the Hall Of Fame was about 4 years ago and there was a T206 wagner on display donated by Halper. It was beat to hell though with tack holes in if, if my memory serves. It would probably grade a PSA-1. With that said it was impressive to see 1 up close, and a nice gesture from Mr. Halper to donate it. I remember telling the kids how historic the card is, the kids were interested, the wife yawned image ...jay

Here are some recent sales of Wagner cards in low grade:

    $78,144 for a PSA 1 example

$86,730 for an ungraded Fair/Poor example

I don't know whether it's the same one you saw, but I had the privelege of seeing one a year ago in New York, as part of the Baseball as America exhibition. The exhibition comprises items from the Hall of Fame's collection and is currently on show in Chicago. It really is worth a visit - lots of cards among the many wonders but like you, jay, I stood awestruck before the Wagner (in the flesh, as it were). Extraordinary the mystique it has.

I'm looking at the show's accompanying book/catalog and it's not quite as bad as you describe it. Worn, yes, with rounded corners but intact. I'd give it a 3 (but then I'm a very optimistic grader image )
