How many sets are you working on?

I was wondering how many sets are you either actively or passively working on and what are they? I've noticed with some comments made by members here that many people are working on a number of large sets at once.

I myself am actively working on my 1911 T-205 Gold Border (buying raw and grading them and buying slabs)

I am more passively working on:
My 1954 Topps Raw/Graded set which I am down to so few cards that its tough to be actively buying cards.
My 1960 Topps Raw set in EX-MT+, which I am about 45% complete.
My 1970 Topps Raw set in NMT-MT, which I am about 55% complete.

Just thought it would be neat to see what people are active and passive on.

The only set I'm aggresively building right now is 1962 Fleer football. I finished my higher priority All-Time NFL Rushers set, and I'm holding off on upgrading for the time being. My Marcus Allen sets, which are actually my highest priority, are a different case because I have all of the cards raw and graded ones I need rarely come up for sale. There are several I'm passively building:
    Alan Trammell sets
    NFL HOF RC
    1989 Score PSA 10
    SB MVP's
    Heisman Winners
    Teams of the decade

I'm actively working mostly on my 1960, 1961, 1962, and 1963 Fleer football sets. I pick up other 1960's football cards when I find good prices, figuring that I'll get serious about them some day down the road.

I am only actively working on my 1971 Topps set. I am about 20% complete graded, need 19 cards for a complete set (graded and raw). Once I get a complete set (graded and raw), I will work to get my raw cards graded and probably then focus on one of two back burner sets:

1957 Topps set (VG-Ex, some major stars graded)
    1933 Goudey (any condition, raw)

There are other sets I would like to start and collect but, alas, limited funds!

I'm actively working on my 1969 and 1968 Topps baseball sets in PSA 8 or better.

I'm passively working on my 1970-75 sets in PSA 8 or better through my own submissions. I have most of the cards in NM-MT+ raw form but haven't sunk the $ required to grade out those sets.

I'm very, very passively working on 1956, 1957, 1961, 1963, 1964 and 1967 sets in PSA 8+ through my own submissions whenever I can find nice NM-MT raw examples.

And I'm also completing several player sets by default since they are also part of my complete sets.

I am currently listed on several, but the two main ones I want to complete and upgrade are the 1967 Topps and the Pete Rose Basic set. I am at 100% on the Rose, but I would like to upgrade several cards over time.
My question is, how many sets have you registered and then deleted? Has anyone besides me been "all over the place" in terms of what to collect and focus on? I know I have registered several sets only to delete them later.
collecting various PSA and SGC cards
  • I have registered and de-listed at least 10 sets at this point. I still have some interest in the ones that I have dropped, but didn't feel right with them sitting with 0% and no chance of cards being entered in the near future.

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • To answer 1420's question, I haven't "registered" any sets, but these are the sets that I have started, and changed my mind on different focus:

    (All baseball)

48 Bowman (my very first attempt at set building. Small set, had about 50% complete (raw+graded), but black and white design bored me.)
57 Topps (got about 20 graded cards. Changed my mind as I don't like the background color the portriat shots)
61 Topps (like the simple design, but then felt the color was kind of dull, got about 7 cards.)
63 Topps (like the design and color, but the number of cards and lack of well centered example got the better of my patience)
53 Bowman Color (fewer cards, beautiful design, but then seeing how much more this set would cost forced me to re-access)
64 Topps Giants (beautiful cards, affordable, had about 35% complete, but tough to store and display)
50 Bowman (got about 12 graded cards, liked the art work, but cards too small. Too many portriat shots and it's fairly expensive considering its lack of star power.)
52 Bowman - Ok, this is it. 52 Bowman only lacks J. Robinson and T. Williams. The design and color is very attractive. Commons are cheaper than 50 Bowman and more action shots. Set my goal to complete it in 10 years. I would go after 51 Bowman except for financial contriant. Looking at completing a fully slabbed, yet modest mid-grade set. "Buy the card, not the holder."

1951-52 Hockey in EX or better ungraded or graded
Top 50 NHL players of all-time (Hockey News) PSA graded
1966-67 to present upgrading NM ungraded sets
  • Using my definition of active (meaning a set I hope to compete for in October '03) then about 15 to 20. That by the way is very difficult to manage time wise, even without considering the $. Passively meaning sets that I am buying cards from with hope to complete someday, then probably another 30 sets or so for now but growing. I guess that makes me a lot like Davalillo but I just have the short attention span.

I'm fairly active on the T206 HOF set although I have really just started it. Just picked up a Matty PSA 5 Dark Cap as I'm going for the 4-5 grade range.

I'm holding back on my 57 Topps BB set and I may actually decide to break that up to go for the T206 HOFers more aggressively. At around $30-40 for a PSA 8 common minimum it may be too expensive for me to want to complete it.

I've just started my E93 American Standard Caramel set that I'm going for a lower grade version.

I usually have a variety of sets I'm working on. For some of the sets the cards I need rarely come up, so I have other sets that are more readily available. Also, being self employed there are times when I have more disposable income than other times, so I have less expensive sets going for the leaner times (not that I'm addicted or anything). After reading Davillilo's post some months ago I realized that having a few sets going probably would enable me to not overpay when the one card I need finally comes up. Right now I need 1 card to finish several sets (N28, '48 Leaf, '54 Red Heart and '70 Kellogg's) and a handful for several others ('15 Cracker Jack, '41 Play Ball, '60 Fleer, '63 Fleer and '64 Topps Giants). A few other sets I work on whenever something comes around (T200's,'14 Cracker Jack, '16 Tangos, '72 ATG and '50 Bowman).
The most important thing I've found (for me, anyway) is to figure out aas soon as possible what grade I want to complete a set it- otherwise I find I'm on the continual upgrade treadmill. What the registry has forced me to do is be consistant with whatever grade level I'm comfortable with, and that has greatly improved my collection.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

This turned out to be a really good topic.
  • Interesting question. I need to get some focus, but I've been caught up with completing some of the sets my Dad was working on. (I inherited the cards, but only recently have I caught the collecting bug again.)

To this end, I completed 59 and 72 Raw very recently. I started grading some of the cards in 72 since I figured this would be easier to upgrade, but have given up and just put it on eBay. The set is just too big and distracting.

From a registry perspective, I'm working on a 62 that is kicking my pants. (My fault for pretty much starting from scratch.) But as I've exhausted my local dealers/traders supplies, I've had to expand to expand to other years (in raw form) to keep me somewhat active. As a result, I've got 56 partially complete and am working sporadically on 60 and 61. I'd love to work on 57, but again, I need to focus on what I have a leg up on before I start heading after a virgin set (for me.)

    Very interesting thread.
Call me crazy, but I collect 62 Topps BB.

For the registry, my main sets are 1975T and 1971T Greatest Moments. I've also registered 2001 UD Golf and 1993 SP Baseball but they only get added to rarely. I own PSA'd cards from 1952B, 1963T, 1967T, 1970 Rold Gold, 1994 SP Holoviews, and 2002 Topps 206 (why 3 series? it was great with 1, maybe 2, but 3 was overkill) that I bought with the idea of adding to them in the future, but they're all on standby. I'm leaning towards committing to a non-baseball set, like 1970 Tall Boys BKB, 1972 or 1973 FB, or 1972-1973 OPC HK, but I've yet to find one I really identify and will have a good likelihood of continuing. The specialty sets like great QBs appeal to me. Small sets with no messy commons. But I've been accumulating nice 1977 Star Wars cards for submission, a great untapped set, IMHO.

I could say I'm also working on 1895 Mayo Cut Plugs, T-205 and T-206, and 1952T in PSA 9-10, but I've yet to actually acquire any of them.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

    I'm still actively collecting: 1960, 69, 70 (I only need 10 more cards + some upgrades), & 75 Topps Baseball.

    And I'm still passively collecting: 1972, 73, & 74 Topps Baseball.

In the few months since this thread was started, I've begun collecting: T218 Champions, Rod Carew, Willie Stargell, & Mike Schmidt Basic and Master sets, and I'm thinking about jumping into the '64 and '73 Topps Baseball sets as well as a few oddball sets from the '50s and '60s.

    JEB.
  • Interesting topic; helps keep everyone's comments in perspective.

    Completed:

1972 Topps BB PSA 8 or higher (modest upgrading)

    Finish line in sight:

1969 Topps BB PSA 8 or higher (almost 90%, but constantly upgrading)
1973 Topps BB PSA 8 or higher (93%, again always upgrading)

    10 year plan:

1969 Topps FB PSA 9 or higher (or higher? only 2 PSA 10's exist)
1997 Flair Legacys (67% complete, none graded)

I have all the mainstream baseball sets of the 70's and 80's in raw, but all my registry work has been basketball from '69 through '75.
I'm approaching 20% completion of those 7 sets combined.
Working on 1969 through 1975 Basketball.
