Shocking as it may seem, there might be those who could enjoy your coin on it's own merits even without the slam on what others choose to collect.

    I like them........Ken
  • That wasn't intended to be a slam, Russ.

In fact, there are plenty of people in this forum and next door in the registry forum who probably believe that this New Jersey farthing is an ugly, dirty, old coin with some scaly dark brown stuff in the fields and a nick in the rim. And they'd be right.

I posted it because I like it, and I thought it might be fun to show something a little less pristing (OK, a lot) than what is commonly seen here.

  • Singapore,

Such a very neat coin (and comparison with others - we don't often get to see comparisons side by side like that.

Can you please tell me more about it? When? Where? what's it made of. I'm very much a neophyte with coins like this.

Is the stuff around the crown an early type of bi-metallic?
  • I can tell you that the gold around the crown is a brass 'splasher' inserted into the original planchet to discourage counterfeiting.

Struck in Ireland in 1670 or so, some made it to NJ.

There are something like 150 different varieties.

Perhaps a few dozen in sharp XF condition or better, I think. Most are very well worn.

Abuell and a few others could probably provide a lot more and better info than I can - I'm not much of an historian.

Singapore- That is a totally cool coin. I wouldn't even know where to look to find one of these. Can you ballpark the cost of one? Say, for example, NOT the top example, but the one in the middle?

I'd love to add one of these to my collection.

As I mentioned in my post about the EAC convention John Grifee's collection of St Patricks farthings will be up for auction at this Septembers C-4 sale. 168 varieties.
  • My understanding of Griffee's collection is that most of the coins will probably look more like coin 2 or 3 above with all kinds of cool varieties.

The ballpark price estimate for coin 2 or 3 would be perhaps $1500 - 2000 for a nice VF, maybe $500 for a solid VG.

Russ, take a chill pill dude. I thought that we agreed last week to end this sensless psycho-babble. Huh? What's the matter, no burning bird to bury in the bush? Yeah Right!
