Not recently, But have done business at many shows in the past. He was fair, reasonable and I consider him reputable and a good grader.

He played a mean nasty trick on me. First he sent me coins on approval, and he dropped the price before I even saw them. So how could I not buy them all.

Here's one (actually much nicer than the scan):

  • Julian is a great dealer. I have not been able to buy anything from him yet, but he is patient and pleasant to converse with. He has fantastic coins in inventory, and they are fairly graded, from what I can tell.

I make a motion that all future threads about hypothetical situations use fictitious names for the participants. image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I looked all over a show for a certain coin.
After asking Julian if he brought one, he said he had two back at his shop. He described both and I chose one based on his discription. He felt comfortable enough with me to send it on memo. Coin was as described and I immediately sent a check.
As for being "fair", he offers accurately graded coins reasonably priced.
Besides, he is a nice guy. image

    No, I'm not related.

It has been a while since I have purchased anything from Julian but on past transactions he was very fair and helpful. The great thing about Julian is his willingness to share his time and knowledge. He is a class act!image

The siuation with Julian never happened. It was just a hypothetical situation that Andy and Julian were discussing and decided to bring the board into it.

I'm originally from Silver Spring,MD and have known Julian for over 20 years. There is not one negative thing I can say about him. He is one of the nicest, most ethical and knowledgeable dealers in the industry. He cares about numismatics and works to make it a better business. If you do business with him you will never have a problem. You won't have to worry when you go to sell your coins that they were overgraded or misrepresented in any way. He is in the top 1% of the good guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Andy's thread was a follow up on a theoretical situation. Julian is a great guy who will talk coins any time you want. He sends coins to me on approval and has no problem if I send them back. He is a straight shooter.

Edited to add: I second Kranky's motion No real names in hypotheticals.
  • Until I moved a few years ago, I used to visit his shop occasionally. What used to make the biggest impression on me was the way that he would treat his customers. Every customer, whether they were buying 5-figure coins or coins under $10, was treated with total respect. It's obvious that he cares about the hobby and everyone involved in it. Definitely one of the top dealers in my book.

  • I have known Julian for 30 years as one of if not the finest gentlemen in the business. He truly understands this is a hobby designed for enjoyment. Many do not realize Julian has handled most all fabulous coins extant and was assembling world class collections 30+ years ago. In certain areas he is probably the most knowledgable person alive. He has enhanced my and my families enjoyment of numismatics for 3 decades. If you desire real perspective and not just a current snapshot of a coin or collection-call Julian.

Great dealer and becoming a good friend. Has never tried to pressure me and has actually steared me away from coins he knew weren't right for me. Highly recommend.

I have known Julian for about 30 years. His shop is not far from me.
He is strictly first class. When I started collecting seriously 30
years ago he is the dealer who purchased all my mint state key coins
for me before slabbing came about. I trusted his judgement to
purchase uncertified, raw mint state coins since I was in the
learning stage at that point. My dad and I use to go into the coin
shop frequently. The other dealer in the shop convinced me that
Julian was the person to handle the bigger stuff. These were 16-D's,
16 quarters, 14-D cents, etc. so I had to have someone who I could
depend on to deliver. He has great taste for classy coins. Everything
he has bought me has had wonderful eye appeal. All those raw coins
I bought from Julian came back from PCGS in high mint state grades.
I continue to do business with Julian on a regular basis. I can't
say enough good things about him. The part I truly like best about
Julian is not just his in depth knowledge of coins but it is simply
    his integrity.

All of the best dealers have integrity. All of the bad dealers do not know what integrity is.

  • My only complaint about Julian is that he takes better care of his health. Otherwise, I like the man very much.

A dealer once asked me if I noticed any three-legged buffalos on the bourse,to which I replied,"...no,but I saw alot of two-legged jackasses..."

I have had one transaction with Julian. I sold him my extra PRF. ASE's and my Buffalo Commems. Very smooth transaction and good price paid.

I've never had the pleasure of buying anything from Julian, but I've seen him at many shows and auctions. I've also heard about him through the grape vine. Everything piece of information points to a top notch, first class guy that I would do business with and recommend to others.

I have never dealt with Julian. The thread you are referring to was a hypothetical situation that I don't think ever occurred. It kind of got a lot of people indignant and riled anyway!

He has been in the business since before I was out of diapers. He represents the part of numismatics that brings integrity and trust to numismatics. I believe he would be a man of utmost honor and integrity.

  • I've bought from Julian before, and was very happy with the coin. He has been around for a long long time.

I would be admitting how ancient I am when I admit when I first saw his bourse table....but then again it was so long ago I forgot exactly when. image
