A friend contacted me today about a strange state quarter that he recieved in change. He was trying to describe it over the phone, but wasnt real sure what he was describing. He sent me some photo's of it, but I am still not sure, never seen a striking error quite like that.

Looking at the photo, it appears to be a strike thru error, at best ?

Any comments as to what it is and value, Ill pass it on
thanks

It could be a struck fragment. Which state is it?
    Tempus fugit.
  • It's possible that this wasn't a mint error but something done to the coin after being circulated. It could have been struck with a punch then hit with an awl.

Dog97 would probably know. He's the error guy here.

Hey that's cool! It could have been a traped gas bubble in the planchet or a strike thru. If the inner copper core shows I'd go with delaminated gas bubble and if it's normal color, then strike thru.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • It is bizarre looking, whether or not it is a broken clad bubble, a strike-through, or something that happened to the coin after it left the mint.

Very interesting at which to look!

    Thanks for sharing it.
