What's the verdict on the toning of this eagle?

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,248 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have quite a few toned eagles, and I give them the benefit of the doubt that they weren't heat/chemically treated because the high silver content does tone very quickly. Now comes this one- regardless of the verdict, it is a beautiful coin. My concern is the rings, which I haven't seen on an eagle before... the colors almost look too neon/bright as well. What do you think?

That is one gorgeous piece. I have to ask, not being well-versed in toning, depending on the price, how much does AT matter vs. natural if it looks that good? With minimal experience, it looks AT. Please don't flame the newbie!!! image

  • Jeremy,
Right offhand I'd say Miss Liberty met Mr. Blowtorch. Looks AT'd big-time to me.

I,m with the crowd that says ` AT or NT. I dont care. Its wonderful toning. Major eye appeal because of the eveness
    and smooth-flowing colors.

Wow. Its a looker for sure.

Yes I hear about their high silver content as the reason they tone so quickly. And while this may be true.... IMO it just means they tone quicker or AT quicker if put in the right (or wrong) environment. I also know many people won't agree with me and also Pcgs slabs them.

Funny thing is the ones I have from 1986-1987 don't have any color on them. This is JMO and nothing against you or your coins. So I guess I could have made this shorter and just said I don't buy the theory that it's ok these tone with wild colors in 1-2 years because of their high silver content.image

Here's one of my 1987s, no longer in a slab:

I have another like it where the colors are flipped, and a few other toned ones waiting for airtites and a digital camera to capture their color.

stman- whether you buy it is your opinion, but it does make sense- say they are stored in an envelope- they develope the tone that any silver coin would, but since there are no other metals to interfere, they develope the toning that much faster.

    Jeremy

PS- I also agree that regardless, it's gorgeous

Agreed, and I've considered all those situations, but just can't bring myself to say that all these silver eagles being "Made"image Are natural. BTW, I have one in an envelope and no colors. A little brown and that's it. Maybe I need to get a pretty red one? I'm half-way joking with you now so don't take it to heart.
