Knoxville Collection

GREAT group of coins which reappeared at CSNS. Any stories? I own one coin from this collection, purchased years ago, though most kept/bought as group at initial sale. One of, if not the, greatest type collections ever formed. K

A stunning, superb collection. My only regret is that it was not sold at auction as I would have treasured the catalog forever!

How did the collection get its name?

I heard it was assembled by the ghost of Elvis.image I have also heard the collector who owned it lived in Knoxville.

That's what I'm wanting to find out. If it's this Knoxville, and if I can go and see it. image

Legend has the Knoxville 1849 half dime up on their website. PCGS
MS 68. Can't wait to see the scan on that one.

So how did the collection get its name?
  • nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
Ahh, can you release their name? I'd be curious if I've heard of them. The likelihood is that it's one of about 10 people I'm thinking of.

Could be. But around here, there are only so many people with the kind of money to pull of the type of collection I keep hearing about. Clayton is the most likely. After all, he is a billionaire...

Since we are discussing the Knoxville Collection, did anybody have a chance to see the 1794 and 1795 Dollars and the 1796 Quarter? Any comments?

I would love to hold that coin in my hand. Alas, it's not to be!

The one thing I don't understand about the Knox. 1794 Dollar is if it has a silver plug then why does it have so many adjustment marks?

The Knoxville collection collector prevented me from attaining most of my desired type silver set coins of the 18th century. I could not compete against him price wise for the coins. He was a very determined chap. I encountered much disappointment along the way.

As a result, I had to go to the path of least resistance and go to the US $20 liberty series and Canadian for finest known coins aside from the "leftover" US mint coins I was allowed to pick up.

If you look closer.......... the Knoxville collector had taken the name I wanted so much about 10 plus years ago!!

So I had to settle for second best once again. Ore as in gold or silver ORE + VILLE equals oreville.

Which Canadian coins did you get, oreville?

Luvdawgs: Norweb 1875-H SP 5c, 10c and 25c. Also Norweb 1871 PEI 1c in MS-67. Also a few other non Norweb PCGS graded MS-68 Canadian and New Brunswick graded coins fron the 1900-1919 era. A number of ICCS graded coinage including the 1921 25c in MS-63 but not the 5c and 50c. This is a decent sampling of what I had gotten.

Dealers included Walsh, Campbell, Parrino, CAND and TOREX auctions.

Oreville, so are you from around these parts?

To my knowledge...The Knoxville Collection was originally sold in the late 1990's. VERY high grade and formed by a very prominent professional numismatist. Many finest known and killer coins....gem FH, Dr.Bust, Cpd. Bust, Std., minor denominations. Emphasis on silver. Graded and pedigreed by NGC at time of sale(s). Most are currently offered/sold in PCGS holders. I own a couple coins....would like to own a couple more! The major rarities I'm told are already sold.
