NH's Old Man in the Mountain: THE REST OF THE STORY

wayneherndonwayneherndon Posts: 2,356 ✭✭✭
There were several threads yesterday on the collapse of this landmark so I'm sure by now that everyone is familiar with the basic story.

Now the rest of the story:

In the last 24 hours, we've sold 48 rolls of New Hampshire quarters between eBay and our website!!!! We normally average one or two rolls a day of these older states.

Apparently, this has sparked some interest in the quarters.

Amazing isn't it? I can just see ebay lighting up with all sorts of sales for NH quarters! Well - I'm glad you sold them Wayne - let's see how the rest of the crowd does!

Is that a good thing or a bad thing, Wayne? It's good for people who sell the quarters and it's neat that coins are being recognized for their depiction, but, what are these people thinking? What is their motivation? I disagree with most and think that the NH quarter is well-designed - I've seen the icon. We brought out vacation pictures to show the kids what The Old Man in the Mountain looked like. Do these collectors they think the coins will escalate in value because of the unfortunate occurance? Hell, all of the people on US coins are dead. I'm sorry this might seem like a bummer message, but, What are they thinking?

it has been going down for years. I am surprised it didn't happen in the winter not the spring but it has been rain like crazy down there this last week. I sure that had something to do with it.

It is up to 50 rolls now.

There was one larger order that I suspect is a speculator. NH has moved up a buck or two on the wholesale level the last month or so. So, someone may be thinking that they are going to be the next KY-P or TN-P. That thinking may be independent of or in conjunction with the monument's collapse.

Most of the orders were for a P and D roll which seems to me to be collectors that have realized they missed this one. They probably heard the news, heard the monument was on the quarter and when they went pull their rolls to get a closer look, realized they didn't have this one. In a few cases, they're also picking up a roll or two of other states, usually the earlier ones. So again this could be holes in their collections.

Anyway, thought you guys would find this interesting!

That humanity at large will ever be able to dispense with artificial paradises seems unlikely. Most men and women lead lives at the worst so painful, and at the best so monotonous, poor, and limited, that the urge to escape, the longing to transcend themselves, if only for a few moments, is and always has been one of the principal appetites of the soul.

    Abe's not dead......but according to the U.S. Mint, he's a double-amputee.
