I've been one of those "take a little out each month" type of collectors. I've been thinking, though, of saving all that money till the end of August and buy me a really nice liberty $20 for my birthday. I figure I can get a MS-63 that looks nice for reasonable money. Just not sure if I'm patient enough. Delayed gratification...
When I got restarted collecting about three years ago, I would make acquisitions that later turned out to be mistakes. I let them go, usually at a small loss, and finally found what I really enjoyed - nice "PQ" type gold, mostly MS64, and gold dollars, also mostly MS64s. There's just no way I can afford more than a very few additions a year, so most of the time I'm waiting & studying while the cash slowly accumulates. It's really not as bad as it sounds, once you've discovered which coins really please you, and how long it takes to find a suitable candidate. I haven't bought a "mistake" in quite awhile, all the waiting makes you that much more selective.
I like your comment MS71, I too learned several years ago, not to impulse buy for my collection. After making a few buying mistakes in past years. Ive learned to be more patient, and look for the piece that fits me next. I dont mind at all paying the stronger money for the right coin, and actually expect too, but waiting for it to come available is the key for me.
When i sold my collection in the spring of 89, i had no intention of leaving the hobby, i just needed the money for wedding costs and furniture. However i did feel prices for the entire coin market were to high and due for a correction so after i was married i deceided to wait to see what would happen before buying another coin.
Within 6 months the crash started and i decided to wait for the dust to settle before reentering purchasing coins but the dust really didn't settle for years. From my last purchase in the spring of 89 to my next purchase was 10 years, but i wouldn't really call what i did leaving the hobby, more like a leave of absense. Les
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.
