J-297 Gilt on eBay

Two different obverse dies were used for the J-297, a high date and a low date. This is one of only about 12 known of the low date variety (P-355). This is the only gilted J-297 graded by NGC (with five non-gilted), and the PCGS pop report does not mention any gilted J-297s. We are aware of only one other gilted J-297, an ANACS AU50. In other words, this gilted low date J-297 is, at the very least, an R7, and is quite possibly an R8. The gilt makes the coin appear to be fully gold, though the lighting for the pictures does not demonstrate the coin's true beautiful color. A nick on Miss Liberty's nose is the one detracting mark that keeps this from a significantly higher grade. The motto "God Our Trust" appears on a scroll on the reverse. The first coins to make reference to our faith in God proclaimed God Our Trust and appeared in 1861 on the pattern Liberty Seated half dollars and two pattern eagles, one of which is identical to this design, save the date (J-285). The motto In God We Trust did not appear on US coinage until 1863 on a few patterns.
