Have I gone too far?

So I just started my 3rd toned Peace registry set over @ NGC. The first isn't even completed yet, but now I'm getting triples of coins! I just can't part with them. I can see the Hoard coming! What to do, what to do! I can't even sell the ones I consider ugly.

Since I've decided to kinda specialize in toned Peaces, is it okay to hoard these like Russ does with AHs? Are three registry sets okay? Is a Hoard okay? Am I going to far?

Anyone else, besides Russ, here have a predilection (sp?) for one type of coin?

Thanks for the help!

Michael

Hoard away! Have fun doing it! Just think, some day people will have to knock on your door to find a nice toned peace dollar. Other than mine, of course. image

Michael, I don't see this as a problem. Here is my NEWP from the show today.

The better question is Michael - where the heck do you find them at reasonable prices! - I've looked at several dealers and at a couple of small/medium shows that I've been to and found 1! Maybe we can ease your pain by taking a few of them off your hands! image

Duplicates and a couple of triplicates are A-OK. 60 of one coin is extreme.

DHeath- That is a fabulous coin. Is it off to NGC?

I usually don't find them at dealers or local shows. Most of the time Ebay, sometimes I get offered a coin here and there, and sometimes just sometimes I get lucky @ a show. Today, at the Pasadena, CA show I picked up a NGC MS-63 1928-s with a nice rainbow on the reverse to the left of the eagle with nice luster and a 1935 IGC MS64 (really should be a 62 or 63) with nice frosty surfaces and a slight rainbow on the obverse and reverse where the golden toning meets the original surfaces around the rim.

I paid $420 for both, which is right @ or just slightly above greysheet. (I think)

By the way, DHeath and Frank, I like both of those, but then again I really haven't seen/met a toned Peace I didn't like!

Do you have any nicely toned 1921 Peace dollars? I love the 1921. I have 2 in MS64 (NGC graded) but neither is toned.

There is nothing wrong with your approach. I have done the same with Mercury dimes. This is just another sign of an advanced and sophisticated collector. You are maturing in your collecting methodology and enjoying the finer nauances of many types of white, toned, and other types of aesthetic appeal. This is a good thing.

Mike, just how 'ugly'are any of your 28-P's?that's the one I always keep an eye out for at shows and some dealers ask something like $155.00 for cleaned raw ones,no thanks,I'd be happy with a nice AU as it's only going in my Dansco. In answer to your original question,no you love Peace dollars and there's nothing wrong with that. The ones you've shown me are really nice,I'd say keep collecting and enjoy yourself.

    Michael,

Hoarding is your God given right. It may even be affirmed somewhere in the Constitution.

PS: There's at least one you don't have:

LOL....yes, it's fairly spotty. Actually the reverse convinced me of the coins originality, and once I did a little research, I discovered several 1925s that had interestingly enough been washed in exactly the same direction obverse and reverse as mine. Here is one on Teletrade tonight on which the wash is evident, but without toning. Pretty interesting.

  • yes you have. why not put your money into higher graded coins. seems 'Your Only Toned Peace Dollar Collection" is an obsession. why not concentrate on completing one high grade collection then move onto the other sets. one great set is better than 3 medium grade sets.

Tgilliams -- for all that I know I might already have the highest grade toned only Peace $ sets. There aren't pop figures on just toned coins. I have a NGC MS65* toned Binion that I am almost positive is the highest graded toned Binion Peace $ in existence. I also have several other MS65 pieces as well as some MS64s. I probably already have the most deverse set ie dates and mint marks.

For the most part the only MS66 & MS67 Peace dollars I have seen are blast white or have a slight patina but no real color.

A question I fight with all the time is do I trade grade for color or color for grade. And my answer is why would I want a run of the mill, blast white peace dollar collection, just so I can say I'm in the top three in the registry? Anyone with enough money could, with some searching assemble a set rather quickly, nothing really unique in that.

If I could find MS66s and MS67s with beautiful color, I'd sell my blood/organs for those coins. (O- by the way if anyone has 1. I am a universal donor! image and if necessary a kidney is available but only for a toned proof 1921 or 1922)

I seem to have a weakness for 1803 S-262 large cents. (I only have three but I'm always on the lookout for more. I'm not the biggest nut on them though. I know a collector who has 105 of them.) I also like 1791 Hampshire D&H 89's. i have about six of them now in grades ranging form VG to Proof and I have my eye on a couple more Proofs.

I'd certainly find something else to collect rather for a third set of Peace Dollars.

Within my core collection, I believe that I now own one duplicate. It's a 1912 $2.50 gold piece. I've got one in a date and mint set of Indian quarter eagles that is in a Capital Plastics holder and another in my type set. That's it. I have other duplicates in a some rolls of Wheat cents that I have laying around, but those coins don't have much value.

There are too many great coins out there that I would like have. Tying up money in duplicate coins makes no sense to me.
