Now that I've got it...should I keep it?

BlackhawkBlackhawk Posts: 3,899 ✭✭✭
I bid on and won a toned 1946 Walker, now I'm looking for comments on it. The series is hard to find with decent toning, but I would have liked it to be a 65. The seller has a return policy, so if it doesn't look good in person I can send it back. Auction Link

Thanks,

Wait until it comes- in all honesty, isn't it kind of dumb to dismiss a great coin because of what the plastic says? You said " The series is hard to find with decent toning"... so if this is the decent toning, what does the grade really matter? The difference between a 64 and 65 will probably only be a tick or two, anyway.

I surely wouldn't dimiss it without looking at it or I wouldn't have bid. I'm asking forum members familiar with the series for their opinions.

Hard to judge by a photo on an angle, but I think it looks nice. One I would buy at the right price if I saw it.

Well that is certainly a generous premium for the color. Not to say whether it is, or isn't, worth that premium. I'm with Nwcs about the angle of that shot and the big flash reflections. Just take your time when the coin arrives. Don't immediately open the package. Take a few moments to get yourself in a proper mood to properly assess the coin. I think that first 10 to 15 seconds are very critical to providing you with your long-term impression of the coin! If those 15 seconds give you a "good" feeling in your gut, then KEEP that baby. If the first 15 seconds provide a feeling other than "good", then you probably won't like it next week or 10 years from now. Just my opinion.

No - what'll happen is that you'll take the thing out and look at it while you're driving 80 MPH on the interstate and wonder how you wound up home without looking out the windshield! image

After doing some searching on the internet for toned Walkers, I'd have to say that if the coin has attractive surfaces when in hand, the premium paid for the toning is not too bad. There's really not much out there for colored Walkers, and many of the coins that are advertised as having nice toning either have a monotone crescent or some blotchy toning by the rim...very little color separation or rainbow effect. I'm looking forward to seeing it in person.

It's probably a 63, NGC gave it a bump to 64 for the color, and the seller is giving it another bump because it is a 64 with color so you are paying 65 price for it with the double bump.
It has such a goofed up picture it's hard to tell much about it but I see a 2 big hits right above the reflection of the passenger side headlight.
I can see the rev better and the eagle detail loks a little weak and there is a tick on the rim @ 8k.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I don't see any "electric green" toning or anything at all impressive in the less than ideal photo. How the coin really looks will tell the story. My gut feel is that to the seller (who is biased of course), the coin has great color. Over 95% of the coins I see on ebay with the comments of monster or great orig color are just average coins with toning. I suspect this one won't be all that different. I'm sure the coin in person will look nothing like the scan.....could be better or worse. I'm with DCAM on this. It's better to be the finder of a coin like this for $40-75. Whether monster toned Walkers catch on like Morgans have is yet to be seen. Please post your impressions once you see it. Good luck.
