Question for WQ collectors...

How common is the 1944S TDO?

AKA:

Ask Bob Zaps. He is probably the foremost collector of the Washington Varieties. he pretty much knows everything there is to know AND he is a helluva nice guy!!

DAM: I bought one tonight for around $75 in gem grade. It is a neat coin with fairly strong doubling on the "In God We Trust". NGC has graded around 2 dozen specimens in gem grade or better thus far. I personally think it is a neat coin and not all that common at all. If PCGS ever decided to designate the coin, of course, prices on the pieces could rise.

    Thanks for the info Mitch.

My reason for asking is that it's hard to find information on variety sales.

Mine happens to be in an NGC holder graded MS67. I've had it for about 8 years. I bought it at an auction for $30, because of the TDO.

Mitch (wondercoin) raises a valid issue: pcgs not recognizing certain varieties. I had an NGC slabbed 1953 pr68 triple die obverse and when I had it crossed by PCGS they would not recognize the variety. I crossed it anyway and now regret it. (it was sold along with my #1 proof registry set about a year ago). some day, someone will recognize that coin for the treasure it is (or could be if pcgs changed its rules). cheers, alan mendelson

    Thanks washvarities!

Whitewashqtr told me to check with you. I just hadn't gotten around to doing it and saw you had replied.

    Edited to add:

The holder doesn't list the variety. I suppose I'll have it added, do to the nice premium.
