Too Funny!!!!! How many advertised "unopened sets" offered by anyone do you think are actually unopened? 10%??? 25%????50%??? Unless they, in fact, were purchased from the Mint by the original owner, who is to know?
I would have no problem buying this proof set because it is in an original envelope, the newly produced envelopes are fairly easy to tell, the zipcode is listed mearly as 30, where on the real envelopes the zipcode is 19130, the auction he is selling the envelopes for has 30 which means they are fake but the proof set has the zip of 19130 which means its real.
Clearly spoken by a youngster!! When I was a teenager (in the early 60's) my address was Los Angeles 24, CA, which, sometime in the 60's became Los Angeles, CA 90024 (and there was a long phase-in period of zipcodes where both addresses were acceptable). While it is curious to see 1964 envelopes with both addresses on them, without remembering the exact dates of the Zip code phase in, I wouldn't be quite so quick to deem one of those legitimate and the other a forgery!!
<< <i>fake but the proof set has the zip of 19130 which means its real. >>
Sorry to break it to you, but they also make reprints of the 1964 envelopes with the zip code. Not to mention the fact that the government sold off many thousands of unused original ones to private individuals.
I have bought and will continue to buy unopened shipping boxes of proof sets. However, I would never buy an "unopened" proof set from this seller or anyother seller.
If you feel you must, then buy from a quality professional such as Val Webb, Ebay ID- Webbulator. They will be true unopened proof sets.
Though you should not kid yourself. The buyers of the extremely large quantities of proof sets will systematically search the sets by pulling every 4th or 5th proof set and opening it. If it shows nothing of unusual value (Cameo, DDO, small date etc.) then they pull the set 4 sets down. If they find something good, then they pull the proof set on both sides and check for additional goodies. The odds are really working against you before you even start.
