Is anyone in to commemorative gold?

I've seen some pieces being auctioned that were in conditions less than mint state. Do you suppose that many of these commemorative gold coins were circulated during the Depression? Are there some that are rare in MS condition?

I don't believe that commemorative gold saw material circulation during the depression.

Most coins remain in either mint state, impaired mint state, or occasionally AU.

NGC has slabbed a sesquicentennial $ 2.5 in good! As the highest mintage in this series, it is the best candidate for wear.

I'm sure there were pocket pieces.

As to being "into" commem gold, I only wish my pockets were deep enough!

A lot of silver commemoratives circulated and I'd assume some gold commeoratives would have circulated as well, especially during the deperssion.

When you're out of work and need to buy some food, your gold coin collection isn't that important.

Relayer -- yes, although the people who bought these coins were less likely than the norm to become unemployed. The sesquicentennial may be an exception, because of its relatively high mintage, and the fact that it was issued during the roaring twenties when people were flush with cash!

I love early gold commems. I scraped a few bucks together in the late 90's and assembled 10 of the 11 piece set. They were reasonably priced then. Some have almost doubled since then in price. I wish I would have bought the Grant no star back then when I could get it for less than two grand in MS65. My mistake.
