Render Opinions, Oh Knowledgeable Numismatists!!!!

I just got a 1944-D Mercury Dime from Ebay graded MS-64 from NGC. According to the description the coin has full split bands, and as far as I can tell from the picture it does. I assume it was slabbed before the FSB designation was given. So, the question is this... If I get the dime and it does indeed have full split bands, do I send it to PCGS to be regraded for the FSB designation?

You do if you want the official Band designation.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I guess what I'm getting at is, will it serve any purpose? Will the value of the coin increase based on the FSB?

According to the PCGS priceguide, the difference between a coin in MS64 and a coin in MS64 FB is only six dollars, so I doubt it would be worth the expense of resubmission. The '44-D is a common date in high grade and with split bands. My old Registry type set had a '44-D in PCGS MS67 FB, and even that was a relatively affordable coin.

So I would say leave it as it is. Sounds like you got a good buy.

Edited to add: if by some chance you were to gain a couple grade points AND the FB designation, then it might be worth resubmitting. But that's a gamble.

Oh I wondered what you meant by the question. You want to know about the value of the added band designation.
    I second what lordmarcovan posted.

To my knowledge, both PCGS and NGC began using the FB/FSB designation from day one. So, apparently, NGC did not feel the coin merited the "FB" designation.

Ah, yes. He has a good point. I have a Merc dime in an early, first-generation PCGS holder with an FB designation, now that I think of it. And I'm pretty sure I've seen early NGC holders with the designation, too.

  • Ok, I was under the impression that the bands designation was a new thing. I guess I probably won't resubmit it then. Thanks for setting the record straight, everybody.

Full Bands is new for Roosies, not Mercs! Welcome aboard, Dave

coinguy1 I thought PCGS began using the FB designation sometime in the mid-late 90s. I may have to stand corrected on that.

Dog, I am not 100% certain about the "FB" designation having being utilized from the get go, though I'm pretty sure. I, too, am willing to "stand corrected" if need be, though. image

Edited to add: In this case, I don't think it matters anyway, since, as has already been noted, the "FB" would not be worth the cost of the grading fees.

Mark is right if the coin did not get FB the first time at NGC it more then likely is not Full bands, no matter how good it looks.

Must have been the FBL on Franklins I was thinking about..............
I guess this settles it; the PCGS type 1 issued from 1986-89:
