Why is it that certain types of coins bring more money in auctions then from online dealer inventory

High grade red indinan cents are the coin that comes to mind as the best example of this, why?
The money that type date indians are fetching in 66 red at auction these days is rediculas!!
I certainley wouldn't pay more for a coin at an auction than i would pay to a dealer, and i don't beleave it's because more people see the coin in an online auction then can see the same type of coin at a major online dealer's inventory. Les
