3 1964 Proof Sets w AH Kennedys - UPDATE W PICS

Just won this on ebay. I think my chances are pretty good that all 3 sets will have an AH Kennedy in them.

The one he opened did and the other two are unopened. What do you think of the one pictured?

    Lori,

I think you're correct that all three will be the AH variety.

You'll note that I didn't take a shot at them. If you're lucky, the other two won't look like the one imaged. I hope they don't, and you make a nice score.

I agree that they're probably all AH, unless the seller knows the difference (i.e. he used the AH as a come-on). The one pictured looks badly spotted, I hope the others are better.

  • Lori if you don't get AH in the other two you should demand that he take them back and refund your money! imageimageimageimage

about `unopen mint sets`.I think I read here from one that mint sets are not sealed by the mint but people that
get them will seal them themselfs and claim they were never opened.
Is this true or did they indeed come sealed from the mint?

Of the unopened boxes or packages of 1964 proof sets that I've gotten it's been about a 50/50 split between sealed and unsealed. I guess it just depended on whether or not the envelope licker was on duty at the mint that day.

PS: I think that after this length of time, the vast majority - even those that were originally mint sealed - have been opened and picked over. On any given day, about half the 1964 sets listed on eBay are "unopened". I think that's a huge load of crap. Envelopes are easy to come by.

In the auction Lori just won, though, I think the two are legitimately unopened. I'd guess the seller opened the first, saw the condition of the half, assumed the others were the same, and decided to leave the other two sealed in the hope of getting premium money.

Hey VonZipper! I know exactly what you are talking about!!! Sounds so familiar to another heated discussion on the BST boards.imageimageimage
  • Well, the proof sets came in today. The two unopeded sets did not have AH Kennedys like the opened one did but it did have some fantastic toned coins. I think there is damage to this set but the colors are wow. Do you think they can get slabbed? The Penny is awesome, looks more vibrant then the picture. Hard to believe. Too bad about the dirt look by the date.

This set also had this nickel and Kennedy.

The other unopened set was average except the nickel:
