Why collect Patterns?

I don't own any patterns but am interested in the subject.

Can anyone recommend any books?

Why are so many more patterns in NGC holders vs. PCGS?

Why do so few dealers carry patterns? {great if all the "high end" dealers here could answer}

    Pollock and Judd are the seminal books. USPatterns.com is a must. Very few dealers carry patterns, IMHO, because there is not a great demand for them, and they are more difficult to flip quickly. Here's uspatterns' link to a recommended pattern library. Pattern Library

    Two books are good: One by Pollack (author) and the other by Judd (also author, also an older book). I forget their exact "Pattern" title.
    Also the web site www.uspatterns.com is great.

    NGC was used quite a bit on potential upgrades on the grades of the patterns. Hence more NGC slabs. Also NGC quicker to attribute patterns than PCGS.

    Patterns are quite rare and dealers cannot stock enough of them to promote them. Hence they have very few of the,

    There are quite a few patterns available at the Central States show.

    The Judd book is being updated and should be out in the next year. A few are going to appear in the Red Book too.

    Good luck - it's a fun area.

    Lakesammman says it's a fun area. I'd like to find out!

    About the only pattern I could afford is an 1858 IHC because there are a lot of them out there, but he won't let any go! image

    New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
