Just what is a Type 2 in regards to the SMS of 1966?? I haven't heard of that one. Since there was no mintmark, it can't be of the kind in 79 & 81, so what is it?? image

There are several types of SMS coins, but none have been published. You'll
probably need to speak to whoever used the term to discover what was meant.

Could they be referring to the no FG half dollar?

    Maddogale:

No. No such classification exists in print and there is no widely accepted
definition for such coins. There are numerous varieties and types of all
the SMS coins, but none are known as type 2.

There are various DDO's or DDR's etc which come in more than one type,
but are generally known as '66 DDO 2 or something like this. There are
at least two different DDO's on the '66 fifty cent.

    Cladking,

Just because no classification for it exists, doesn't mean some dealer or seller won't call it that. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the Accented Hair called a "Type 1".

    Cladking,

I would be interested in knowing the PUP's for the DDO SMS coins, particularly the 1966 half. If you could shed some light, or give me a source to reference, that would be much appreciated.

Dr.James Wiles lists at least a couple dozen of them in his standard "The Kennedy
Half Dollar Book" -1998. My favorites can be picked up In the "T" or "R" in TRUST, the "G"
in GOD, or the serifs of the Y in LIBERTY. His listing is probably comprehensive, though
it's possible that more have been found.

    added R in trust.

Is it only the half that has varieties? Thought I heard somewhere there was a 66 SMS nickel with a DDR (but that was 3 years ago.)

There are lots of SMS varieties. Some are minor, most are interesting and a few are important.
