1972 staubach psa 8 question

i have a 1972 raw set and upgraded my staubach rookie and sent the other one to psa for grading as i don't sell raw cards very often it is easier to sell graded. it pulled a psa 8. the one i kept is a lot nicer than the graded one.my question is : is this a hard card to get as i did a search on ebay and all i found were psa 8 with o/c qualifiers and didn't see any 9's at all. just wanted an opinion from the football registry people. it is not a set i follow very much and as of now it is not for sell.

thanks...........fab4

    FWIW:

The card has a population of 129 in PSA 8 and 11 in PSA 9 -- over 20% of graded examples pull an unqualified 8 or beter. In my mind, that does not make it terribly rare -- but I do not proclaim to understand the intricacies of the football market. It is the second easiest card in the set to find in 8, in terms of total graded.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

There are 11 PSA-9's, 11 9's that are qualified, 129 PSA-8's and 82 8's that are qualified (most are probably OC). I think the card in PSA-9 generally gets over $1000 on Ebay.

The pop is deceiving on this particular card. There are SO many Cowboys collectors in addition to the others that would want this card (set builders, HOF collectors, Heisman collectors, Super Bowl MVP collectors, etc.), that it rarely comes up for sale in high grade, and when it does it typically goes for a significant premium to SMR. Rare? no. Scarce? yes.

thanks for the info. i knew the smr was 300.00 and that quite a few were graded and only a few showing up on ebay, that it was something more than just a card for the 72 set. now i have to think about the other staubach as it should be a high end 9 (i doubt a 10). thanks again.

  • The biggest problem with the Staubach Rookie is CENTERING! It is very hard to get one that is centered decently. This is one reason why and when a very well centered one comes up for auction the price can go well over SMR. I love that card and have yet to win an auction when the card is well centered.image

the psa 8 is close to 50/50 on centering. pretty nice looking card.

  • I agree with Joe. Despite the relatively large population, the Staubach rookie is a very popular card in a popular set. A well-centered PSA 8 sold on eBay by a person with good feedback should bring a premium to SMR.

  • Fab4- So the question is, are you going to sell the Staubach and for how much?

    carlos,
as of now i am going to keep the staubach raw and with my set. the complete set should grade at least 75% 9's.i have upgraded it when i get the right card.

the psa 8 staubach i have received quite a few offers, the difference in offers is amazing. i think i will ebay it and take my chances as it is a pretty nice example of a 8.

thanks to everybody who responded and when i put it up for sale i will provide a link on the vintage board.

    FAB4,

NICE CARD!!! You should get at least SMR if not more. I would guess $350-$400.
