2003 Jefferson Nickel

With the President signing the leislation for the change in the Jefferson nickel for 2003-2005.

My question is will there be two jefferson nickels in 2003? The one with the old reverse and one with the new reverse.

In 1921 we had both the Morgan Dollar and the Peace Dollar.

TODD they are saying they maybe included in the proof sets or released as a seperate option...but you
will see both this year...and next question yes it will be affecting nickle prices which is why I started my set 2 years ago.

I've heard the same on getting the current 2003. My concern is when they will start stricking the new ones, after they strike 250,000,000 regulars? The date of strike will be an important issue. It wouldn't hurt but the new ones could be late in the year and be worth more.
    I have a few rolls just in case. Go to a WalMart and if your sweet they may sell you some. I've found them there faster than at any bank.{remember the first SAC issues!}

I am getting mixed signals. The US Mint says that they will start making the new ones at the end of this year and we will only see the new ones for 2004 not 2003. As a result the new reverse for the Jeffersons' will be for 2004, 2005 and 2006.

I do not know if we will see any for 2003.

If both come out for the 2003 year - Will we have a type one and a type two?

I've got one box of each mint, so I'm banking on a new design this year.image
  • Now how did you get a box of each mint? Do you know someone at the bank?

Todd: It seems to me that if we have both coins in the same year (whether 2003 or 2004), they would not be type 1 and type 2, because they will be two completely different designs. It would be more like 1883 (Shield) and 1883 (Liberty) -- although that's a bad example, because you have cents and no cents varieties for the Liberties, too.

Boy, now that I think of it, 1883 was a really screwed up year for nickels.

Legislation mandates the coin change for this year.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • From the mint : The Mint is moving quickly in hopes of producing a redesigned nickel in late 2003 or early 2004.

Good article, but Fore is a little over the top: "Think of the discussions that families will have over the dinner table!". . . .

Johnny: Mom, pass the salt. By the way, did you know that the United States had relatively little claim to many portions of the Oregon Territory? Were it not for Polk's aggressive expansionism, much of the American West, including those that Lewis & Clark explored, would not be in the United States today. I learned all about this from looking at the new nickel.

Mom: That's nice son. Hurry up, American Idol is about to start. . . .
