Cleaning gold coins

ahah Posts: 161 ✭✭✭
I am new to the coin collecting field and have been reading and following this and
other forums for a while, trying to educate myself through reading books and following
the forums issues and comments.

I have a cache of gold coins that have been in the vinyl see through 2x2 since 1986,
when I removed the coins, they felt slick and filmy. I have not done anything to clean
them as of yet.

Has anyone had a problem like this? And what can I do to clean the coins
without harming them. I know sending the coin to NCG would be the best route
but, what would be a good 2nd choice for cleaning.

Thanks, Al

That's PVC damage- you used bad flips (move them all out)- your best bet is to send them to NCS... if they can be saved, NCS will be the ones who can do it.

Definitely PVC contamination. They may or may not be damaged. You want to soak them in acetone and rinse them in acetone. That will help. But sending them to NCS would be the best all around solution. You can pay and have the coins graded, or just let NCS slab them. They'll only write "genuine" on them and the cost is much less than a grading fee.
