DON'T clean a coin!

On another thread about IHC's I replied about an instance of cleaned Indians.

My absolute BEST one was when we first opened our shop in 79. Phone call for price on 1911D $2.50. And I gave my canned spiel about not cleaning it first.

Guy came in and was STUNNED when I asked which brand of toothpaste he had used.

Couldn't believe that I could not only tell it was cleaned....but also HOW he did it.

What a mess. I told him I hoped it was about $1000 worth of "fun" because that was what it had cost him.

Unprofessionally cleaned copper cents is a numismatic nightmare of the worst kind.
Too bad those horror stories abound.
Even if done professionally, cleaning copper cents can give unwanted results sometimes.

From what I've seen, NCS does a pretty good job at cleaning up copper.

I hate to see people clean coins. When I was in a local shop, one guy came in with some cull silver dollars. The VF-AU $12 varieties. The was asking the dealer about how much they'd be worth. He said not much. The guy then said he was going to give them to his grandkids and was asking about how to make them bright and shiny for them. I was getting very agitated, but it was not my place to say anything. So the dealer told him how to make a cleaning solution from baking soda and scrub the coins. Yeah, his grandkids might like the shiny dollars today but the guy just ruined 10-15 coins forever. All because the dealer wouldn't say that it was a bad idea.

Coins in which require cleaning should be left to the professionals, and so should AT!image
