My first top pop coin - Does it have extra value?

I made my first "top pop" coin with a 1875 Indian Cent graded PCGS MS-65BN. The population reports show that only three have been made and none finer 3/0. Does that make my coin anything special? Everyone keeps talking about top pop coins with low numbers. I assume that it is nothing special as folks would prefer a R/B or Red coin over a brown one. There are many R/B and Red 1875 Indians in MS-65 and higher.

    Tom,

In the IHC series, all the rage is in full, original mint RED specimens. This is especially true for the common dates, and folks tend to want them in SUPERB GEM condition. Many will go after high grade RB specimens that are nearly RD to save some money, but unfortunately there tends not to be much bragging rights associated with a middling grade common date BN specimen.

I am certain that your specimen is a very nice coin; I just love the medium milk chocolate look that those IHC's come in naturally. Congrats on getting a nice collector-grade coin!

Hey Tom, I personally like the browns, but until there is a large collector demand for brown sets in the registry, I doubt if being a pop-top adds much to the value. The more red browns I see the more I am beginning to appreciate them more than reds. Many of them have way more eye appeal then those graded red. I would buy a high grade red/brown or brown with eye appeal before I would shell out what 64-65 red 72 costs. In fact with the exeception of the 77 one could almost buy a whole high grade bronze set in brown for the cost of a high grade 72 & 77 cost. Like the NFL draft there is value to be had in browns and red/browns.
  • Red-browns are my favorites also.......as that is what all the fantastically toned IHC seem to be graded at with a few browns thrown in. Full reds........for what you're paying in premium dollars......just don't make sense to me.

Imagine.....with the exception os subtle shade differences......all your coins in red look pretty much alike. Not for me......

It's the same thing in Two Cent pieces. Gigantic price jump going from RB to Red - and sometimes the Red doesn't look much redder than the RB.

That's an RB, and I think it's a damned nice looking coin. In Red, it would have cost me about four times as much.
