Do nice U.S. coins ever turn up at foreign auctions?

Do nice U.S. coins ever turn up at foreign auctions? Just wondering as I see this one below {up for auction in the US} and I bet some UK residents would drool over this pup. I don't do darkside but this could change......

  • Yes, check out Ginza coin in Tokyo. A few pieces (12 or so) are usually included in each auction. The one before last they had a round and octagon $50 gold comm, a 1907 high relief and a few other nice pieces. Most recently some early 1800 dimes & quarters. All raw. Unfortunately, due to supply and demand, they are always, always overbid. Most foreign shops here charge a 20-30% premium on any US coinage. Japan has a strong coin market so that makes it even more difficult. Last, Ginza's auctions and supporting documentation are in Japanese. I'm sure there are others, this is the only one I'm aware of.

Here are some in Brazil image

I haven't picked up any gems but I have collected some very nice XF-AU material that I keep in my raw collection. The prices are reasonable for the most part. Like most foreign markets though, they like their coins "shiny"! But I'm working on that transgression also! Dave

You could find US coins in Taisei (Singapore) and Taisei (Hong Kong) coin auctions.

  • I don't know. But I have shipped slabbed US coins to Europe, Canada, Japan and the Middle East.
