Wolfeboro seems to be the hotbed for coin dealers in NH. It's the home of Bowers and Merena (at least for now) and a new company called American Numismatic Rarities (which may not be doing retail sales just yet).

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Kim:

Rare Coins of New Hampshire (RCNH) is up in your neck of the woods - Jon (TONELOVER on the boards) is an active and respected member of the boards and has a really good eye for coins. I would highly recommend them.

I'm in agreement with Frank - Rare Coins of New Hampshire sells quality merchandise and has good guys to work with.

Are you also in agreement that the Red Sox will have to wait till next year AGAIN, Mark? image

Yes, Frank, I agree with that also - too much good Yankee pitching, to go along with pretty darned good hitting.

Ow, how could I forget RCNH? I recommend them as well. They are in Milford.

I am from NH and Mass., and my recommendation is Rare Coins Of NH. I am always doing business with them and appreciate the fact that I can just drive there, with coins, or look at any coins they may have for me at their spacious offices, located on the second floor of a large bank building. Charlie Brown, an ex PCGS Grader, is employed there, and that is one of the reasons I travel there, so he can give me his opinion on any new coins I am about to purchase.
Warren Mills, (THE EYE ), Dave Carleton, and Jon Rosenthal also are there and are very helpfull as well as being top notch coin dealers with years of experience. In short, you will be treated right there, and will realize in short time that they are very honest and ethical.

When visiting Boston, drop in on JJ Teaparty. They are good to deal with.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • Now Frank...it is hard enough being a die hard Red Sox fan. Actually, we've collectively forgotton about first place, and we'll just shoot for the wild card. No pressure that way....
And thanks to all for the referrals!

RED SOX win 8-2 kicking butt. Watch out world.

I second Zerbe, top notch operation with all real first class people. Always have some great coins and knowledgable people who just love to talk coins. Not always on the hustle to SELL,SELL,SELL.

Also if you are down in MASS. there is a nice little shop in Lexington Ma. Lexington Coin, owner Rick Carlson, great guy who gets his hands on some great coins. I have found some of my best coins there.

Welcome to NH! The 3rd Sunday bourse in Nashua (Holiday Inn) is OK, unfortunately it is losing the best dealer there when Bill Jones (board member) moves to Florida this summer.

  • There is a gentleman named Jim (sorry, last name is escaping me at the moment) who has a shop in the Derry area. Nice fellow.

American Numismatic Rarities, which was formed by all the talent that left B & M, is currently just an auction house. By the way they had a table at EAC and they are offering a free copy of their first sale catalog to all EAC members on request. Just send them your name and address tell them you are an EAC member and your EAC membership number. I also found out the Dave Bowers apparently had a non-competition clause. One of the ANR people memtioned that "Dave has to sit things out for two years".

Kim, I'd go with the recommendations already given.
On the house issue, I'd look in Bow, N.H. It's located just south of Concord, and has some very scenic areas to "put" a house. Talk to the realtors to get the positives and negatives (schools, taxes etc. Oh, forget the taxes. They are HIGH, no matter where you end up in N.H. image)

The Nashua show is pretty much a MUST DO for coins around here. Depending on what you collect, there are some decent dealers in the area.

Let us know once you get settled in. There's a couple of us that meet up down in Nashua on occasion. image

  • I can't recommend RCNH too strongly. I have delt with Jon(Tonelover) on numerous occasions; be it here, on eBay, or though RCNH. He has helped me with both my Merc and Washington sets. They have top quality coins, and you couldn't ask for a more friendly or helpful dealer.
You are lucky to be able to pay their office a visit.

    FULL Heads RULE!
  • Some of the guys at Rare Coins of New Hampshire are what I call "coin wienies", i.e., they really get off on coins and enjoy them as well as selling them.

The two dealers I like the best are Warren Mills, the owner, and Jon Rosenthal, a bright young newbie on his way up.

    Enjoy,

    Just having fun!

Rare Coins of New Hamsphire is the outstanding dealer in this industry. I just purchased a coin I had been seeking for a while from Jon. One purchase of less than $200.00 and I had two phone calls and two emails from Jon to tend to details.

    There are none better.

I can't say anything about RCONH and Jon R. that hasn't already been said - but believe every word of it! I haven't dealt with them as much, but Dave Carleton has always been prompt and pleasant in email replies, and Warren (whom I spoke with once on the phone when ordering, some time ago now) was, as you'd expect, very helpful as well.

There must certainly be other dealers "just as nice" but I can't imagine anyone topping them, as it were.

Hey Kim...What BigD5 (Darin) said image

Good luck in NH. I just moved a couple of years ago from Nausea to Chelmsford, MA to escape the huge property taxes. I work in MA so I got hit with a double-whammy, high property taxes and state income tax.

Oh...and the BOSOX? DON'T get me started!

Oh yeah, another thing...Concord is alot farther away form sailing image

    Cheers,

    Bob

Oh yeah...we're ALL going to have to hook up at the Nausea show!
  • The Jim in Derry I think of is Jim Guinesso, of Derry Coin and Stamp.

Whatever you do, don't even think of moving "just outside of Concord," unless you plan on heading north of Concord on I-89. Pittsfield NH, just north of Concord, has the highest property tax rates in the state and the worst public high school.

I currently live in Concord and the property is getting more scarce and more expensive by the minute. You really have to look in the middle of nowhere for a decent property.
  • Sorry Kranky, Bowers and Merena is no longer located in Wolfeboro, NH. They packed everything up and moved to Louisiana with only 3 original staff members from the Wolfeboro office, one of which being Mark Borkardt and the other two just clerical workers. 90% of the staff of B&M went to work for American Numismatic Rarities which has nothing to do or any ties to B&M.

Your best bet Kim, don't buy from any dealers who are publicly held. They tend to look at their bottom line more than giving you a good deal on a coin.
  • P.S.

ANR's website is www.anrcoins.com. They also have coins for sale and not just at auction as earlier mentioned.

    How about STELLA dealers?

    (I originally misread question!)
