Crack a 1973 Proof Set?

I just got a 1973 Proof Set that seems to have some nice coins in it. Should I crack it and sent the coins in for individual grading?

No, you should sell it to me since I collect nice 1973 proof and mint sets. image
  • The packaging is quite different than more recent proof sets. Is there any chance schmutz could get inside and on the coins? Looks like a couple of them may have crumbs on them.

You would know if it was cracked open. Those damn mint workers were using it for a placemat!image

It's always possible that things got in there. I think the mint still hand packed the proof sets then. The mint has had many different cases for their proof sets over the years. If you want all of them slabbed, you can send the whole proof set to PCGS and they'll crack it for you. But if you want only a couple slabbed, you have to crack it yourself.

Post pictures. If they are not DCAMs, don't bother submitting them!

If you don't make 69DCAM, it's cheapre to buy the under grades already slabbed.

  • I'll post the scans tomorrow for all to see.

    Just my two cents,

I seem to get better grades when I send the whole set in than when I break the coins out. Don't know why because the coins look the same. If three of more coins in the set look like they are 69DCAM I'd send the set in and when the coins come back look at the losers as just part of the cost of playing the grading game. At least that's my new philosophy.
