Vindication for Tonecoin2003 & the Story of One 1962-D Franklin.

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
A few weeks ago there was a Thread regarding the sale of a Tonecoin2003's artificially toned coins on eBay. It ended up pretty negative in nature and, as easily as it is to forget "last weeks flame" I thought a follow up would be appropriate.

I had seen one of Tonecoin2003's Franklins on eBay and liked it. I liked it enough to bid and eventually, after the auction ended I received the coin.
Tonecoin2003 was accurate in his coin description.
I promptly sent the coin in for PCI grading (sorry, I just wasn't interested in waiting 51+ days for its return) and was not surprised to find it holdered as authentic toning.

In fact, just for fun, I present it here-

I just thought it fair the whole story be tolded. Thanks Tonecoin2003 for a great addition to my toned Franklin half collection.

Well, I thought PCI sucked before, but this definitely confirms it. Let's see.......I think I will pass on their submission kit. image

PCI has long been known as the final resting place of bodybagged toners from NGC and PCGS.

Hey Russ, are you going to crack it and re-submit to PCGS?

So, what are you guys saying? That the fact that PCI slabbed it is meaningless? That it's still an articially toned POS? Might they also slab cleaned and/or whizzed coins? Are you saying that they are completely useless, and should not be relied upon as any kind of indication that a coin hasn't been doctored?

imageRuss, they are a good company! It is unfortunate that there are to many bigoted people whose only thoughts are god almighty and his second! The P and the N companies.
I have several PCI's and they appear to do a good job and are honest about the grades!

Crack it out and send it to me. I'm about to send a bunch of AT coins off to PCGS for the CoinReports website. I finally got in everyone's coins and I think that would be a perfect example for the site, plus I don't have any Frankies yet.

    Let me know,

So, what are you guys saying?

    hey russ

i think what everyone tends to believe is that PCI's reputation has suffered in the last 1-2 years. their standards, so much as the numerical grade is concerned, seems to have become liberal and noticeable. it follows that designating CAM/DCAM and other things such as the ever present AT issue should also suffer.

the coin looks OK to me, but what do i know?? i find the softer pastel toning more eye appealing than the very vibrant coloring and crescent or half moon patterns. what is the forum basing there AT claim on----i missed the previous thread--- and what's your opinion of the coin? does it look properly graded? do YOU think it's AT? do YOU like it?

Absolutely! Plus, I am more suspect of coins in the bottom-feeder slabs than raw coins.

    hey russ

the color looks similar to your MONSTER yum yum coin. my questions--why do you think it's AT? do you think the bell lines are full and the grade is correct? same questions about the cent as far as the tone.

Russ, before you rely on anything in a green or gold label PCI slab with a 9 digit serial number, read this entire thread concerning an incident before you signed up here:

Hey Russ, if PCI is so respected by you, crack the PCGS PR68DCAM AH and re-submit it to PCI, you might make a PR70DCAM!!!

    Bawhahahahahaha!
