Easy question:::::::::::

Hey,
I'm new to this, so please be kind enough to answer my easy question if you know the answer without laughing too hard.

I received a load of used coins from my grandfather, and I was browsing and sorting them (sort of since I don't know s*&# about this, but I'll learn) , and I found one very intriguing coin...
It's a 1979 penny in very good shape, but it's gold. Never seen one like this. It's not just more shiny than others, it really look like gold.

So, any idea of what it is and what it's worth?

Thanks for your time.
D.

It's either paint or plated; thus, numismatically it's a damaged coin and would have no value. Could you post a picture of it?

It maybe gold plated. Occasionally you`ll see year sets that are gold-plated. In this case it may have come from a novelty set of 1979 coins in as a commemorative of the first year of release of the Susan B Anthony Dollar. If so, it would likely not be worth more then face value as it was meant to be a novelty. That would be my guess.

Do you have a way to get some coin books like a local coin show or coin shop ? Get a copy of the Red book for 2003 which lists all U.S. coinage except some patterns. I'm no expert but that is a very good place to start learning about what you may have except that plated penny which as was said is only worth 1 penny.

What else did your grandfather give you ? Les

Oh, by the way, welome to the boards!

There are many new collectors, old time collectors, and dealers that hang out here and i've found some good friends and valuable sources of information here. Have fun. Les

Welcome to the boards! Sometimes cents come with a golden color, so it could be just the way it is. It could also be plated or painted. Only worth a cent, though.
  • Hey!
    Thanks for the answers!
Sad it's worth nothing, but at least it look great.
I'll see if I can get it scanned. For your eyes only.

Maybe I'll have some other easy questions soon...

    TheGreen,

The 1943 Cent is supposed to be grey in color. They're known as steel pennies, made because copper was in short supply during the war.

  • Ho...right. Well, that was real easy!
    Thanks.
