Pick The Best Franklin

labloverlablover Posts: 3,661 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've got a 1958 Double Mint Set. Which Franklin would you keep if you were me. Two choices to pick from. The P mints are the top two (obv and rev) D mint are last four. So we'll call them choice 1, 2, 3 and 4. Value your input. They're raw, ungraded coins. Guess that's why they call them raw.

WOW - those are awesome looking Frankies!!! Condition wise it's hard to tell - it appears that the #1 set is a little better than the #2 set. The #2 "P" in particular looks like it might have some scratches on the obverse, but I don't know if that's just the picture. I would put them side by side, all the halves. First look to see which have Full Bell Lines and which, if any, don't. Then select the ones with the least number of hits on the face area, and the bell area. Hopefully by then you'll have the best P and D coins to keep. BEST OF LUCK! They're all beautiful coins!!!

Thanks Lucy...you would keep them all.
Frank, not sure if they're FBL. I'll blow the lines up on each and post for opinion.
Got a 1954 and 1957 that just came back from grading. Some FBL in 64 and I think one 65.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Jim:

As you consider your coins for FBL here's what you'll be looking for - if it looks like the top pic - its non-FBL - if it looks more like the bottom pic, then you've got a winner! image

  • I have to agree with Lucy, keep them all. If you don't, you will want to kick your butt later on..........Ken

Ok, I enlarged the lines...so, any FBL? My guess is only one of the four. What ya think?

I just love those Mint set pieces (have around 30 or 40 of them) Franks advice is solid. The only other consideration I would add is luster.

Guesses entirely on the pictures of the bell lines so don't hold me to them:

    MS65FBL
    MS65FBL
    MS66
    MS65

I like the bell lines of the top coin and think it will make FBL. I'm not as sure about the second, though Frank's monitor always seems to give him a better picture than mine, so I would trust his opinion. The other 2 definitely won't make it.

BTW, the top coin on what I am looking at has a D mint mark. You had said, in your original post, that the top 2 coins were P-mint coins. I see D-P-D-P.

Then you did the zoom of the bell lines and they show up as D-D-P-P. image

Yep...senior moments. They may not be in correct order. It's just a test of ones ability to discern some logic in my madness and rush.
Thanks, I'll try to correct but knowing me I'll screw it up.image
