ElectricEye Dale Earnhardt made NASCAR what it is today. You don't have to like it, but it has more spectators than any other sport today. So don't knock it or the man..
Nascar is certainly entertainment for a select group of people, but to call it a sport is quite a stretch. Auto racing is popular throughout the world, but putting your foot to the floor and turning left for 3 hours is only considered racing among a rabid group in the southern United States.
Most people in the world have never heard of Dale Earnhardt.
"Lenin is certainly right. There is no subtler or more severe means of overturning the existing basis of society(destroy capitalism) than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and it does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose." John Marnard Keynes, The Economic Consequences of the Peace, 1920, page 235ff
speak for yourself deadhorse, these racers race for hours on end and have to be extremely atheletic under some severe driving conditions. It is a sport and a big one, get a clue!

Be-Bop: I'll stand by my statements. It's the truth regardless of your feelings. Being athletic and in good shape doesn't constitute a sport. If these guys ran the 500 hundred miles themselves, I'd agree with you.
Nascar is only called a sport by a rabid few. It's a spectacle and it's entertainment, but by any true definition, it's not a sport.
It's car racing at it's most boring, and yes, that is a personal opinion. Each to his or her own. I happen to love and follow Formula One racing, but I don't call it a sport.
Didn't mean to gore your golden calf.

Attack me and make snide remarks if you like. The fact is that the majority doesn't consider car racing a sport. If it were then it's the cars that are the athletes.
Your arguement is common from those who follow Nascar, but it doesn't change anything. By the way, how did our Olympic car racing team do last time out?
When I voice an opinion, I say so, when I state a fact, I don't feel the need to label it as such.
Why don't you go after the guy who made the die crack in the head comment? That was an insult to a dead man, something I would never do and I feel was in poor taste.
Sheesh, I said rabid fans earlier, thank you for making my point.
Let's talk about those Bugs Bunny Frankies, OK? I just picked up a carrot orange toned one the other day.

who is the majority that you quote? How do you know? did you conduct a poll? Maybe you went door to door and interviewed everyone?
Since you with your vast depth of knowledge brought up the olympics, do you see bob sleding as a sport?
Nascar is a team sport that all the players have to be in top condition. Everywhere from the drivers to the pit crews.
<< <i>Why don't you go after the guy who made the die crack in the head comment? That was an insult to a dead man, something I would never do and I feel was in poor taste. >>
no but yet you feel you feel as if you can speak for the majority of the people on whether nascar is a sport or not.

You probably did, a at loser coin.
Be Bop A Lula!! "Senorita HepKitty" "I want a real cool Kitty from Hepcat City, to stay in step with me" - Bill Carter
I'll add to the poll, Driving cars in a circle is BORING, and requires minimum skill compared to road racing. Dale Earnhart was not that great of a racer and did not win many races ,but drove a dirty race most of his life.
What exactly are you quoting to state: You don't have to like it, but it has more spectators than any other sport today.
If that is the case, it's surprising to me that I have to look to a cable channel for any coverage - that to me is a good indicator how popular a sport is. How often is it on "broadcast" channels.
On the coin note, well, I feel like most coin collectors and numismatists, when it comes to "colorized" coins.
theboz11 made his opinion known, I disagree with it, but he has every right to his opinion and he didn't have to resort to claiming he knows how the majority feels.

An loser AT coin, eh? Thanks so much for showing us your "colors".
What a bitter little (fill in the blank).
This has been gone over ad infinitum on many fronts for many years and sports writers worldwide have concluded that car racing is not a sport as such. Pull your head into the daylight and look around the big, big world. People who think Nascar is car racing and that car racing is a sport are indeed a rabid and, apparently bitter in your case, few.
I know I'm new here, but I won't let someone with such a limited and emotional outlook back me down.
Sorry you had to take this down to a personal attack, I really am. But I've learned that that is usually the resort of those with a limited outlook and knowledge.
You may know coins and you may know about Nascar, but you don't know what you are talking about with regards to the world of auto racing. You're not alone, that's generally the way it is with Nascar fans.
"Lenin is certainly right. There is no subtler or more severe means of overturning the existing basis of society(destroy capitalism) than to debauch the currency. Tell me you could jump into a car and drive hundreds of miles per hour for hours and hours at a time without killing yourself or any of your competition. Tell me that you could drive around in monotonous after monotonous circle without suffering from the effects of dizziness. If you could, then you could be part of a sport that has grown more than any other over the last five years.
The sport that is catapulting to the top of America's television ratings is NASCAR racing. And the argument has begun to surface, is it a sport?
Are you kidding me? Of course it is a sport. The dictionary definition of a sport is, "an activity usually involving physical exertion and having a set form and body of rules."
NASCAR racing clearly fits into this definition. It is an activity that involves physical exertion, where a driver is required to have the skills and endurance to control an intricate mass of metal.
They have to be in physically good shape to drive a car that hovers between 90 and 100 degrees for up to four hours. And let me tell you, pit stops aren't time outs. That nine to 19 second break is barely enough time catch your breath, let alone grab a drink of water.
In order for a driver to maneuver a 3.5 ton car at speeds up to 200 mph around a little cement track, they must be in adequate shape. If you make a mistake the consequences could be life-threatening.
Another argument that holds no ground is that NASCAR drivers aren't athletic. If you noticed New York Yankee pitcher David Wells strolling down the street, you'd notice he was in need of another notch on his belt, but you know that he is still a damn good pitcher. Craig Stadler, a talented golfer also known as the "Walrus," doesn't look like he could be capable of winning anything athletic. My point is that these guys get the job done, even though they might look like Jenny Craig frequenters.
If all of this isn't proof enough that NASCAR is a sport, remember that ESPN has exclusive coverage of it daily.
What other proof do you need?

I can say I don't much care for NASCAR but that's just me.
BTW Lucy:
I put some more work into my motorcycle and had it dynoed the other day.........175 horespower at the ground with 92 lb. ft. of torque. It has cost me $15,000 so far and counting
Man ol man that bike must really get it!!!!!! I have felt some very awesome power in my mid 11 second vw but I can't imagine that kind of power on a bike..... That is really scarysville!!!!!! So thats what you do with the cash you make from the nice tonies that you sell.....

Nascar Racing has been reclassified today for the rabid masses as a "Reality Show." Ratings have gone higher than ever when "Deadhorse" the unreknowned sports authority on "The Coin Forum" self righteously declared it not to be a sport. Numismatically, he has agreed in principle to supply all members of the forum with a genuine "Dale Earnhardt Reality Racing Round, with a small shipping and handling fee of $29.99 ea. E-mail him for yours today to celebrate this momentous occasion as a monumental racing sport enters its new life as a "Reality Show" darling. Survivor, lookout!

I played the video game: Q-Bert for six hours on one quarter in the arcade once. It took "lightning reflexes" and zero time for potty breaks, but I wouldn't call it a sport either.
Dale Earnhardt needs no defense. You obviously know nothing of the man including his talent but especially his character. I suspect that you can only dream of having the kind of positive impact on hundreds of thousands of people and a fantastic sport, like Dale did. Deadhorse...you are simply an agitator. I am a Warden at a 1,000 bed prison in Florida. I deal with your type every day. You don't have to be a country bumpkin to be a NASCAR fan...go to a race and you will see! It's very similar to buying the book before you buy the coin. Know what you are talking about before spewing forth your bs.
I'm coming in late on this discussion, but for all you that get dizzy trying to get the toilet paper off your shoe... It's better that you don't like racing. What sporting event did you go to that had over 170,000 fans in attendance? You weren't at Daytona this year. There's an estimated 75 million nascar fans. I don't think some of you could hould your bladder for 5 minutes at 200 miles an hour rubbing the wall or another car, never mind for over 3 1/2 hrs with fresh air at over 100 degrees F, complete with exhaust fumes from the other 42 cars on the track. Your feet burning from the heat off the fire wall, the constant rumble of a 700 horsepower engine. The pressure to win, to give something back to your fans, your sponsor, your team. Even with all the safety equipment, all it takes is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It takes more than a multi-million dollar plus contract to go out there and race. They don't worry about elbows and getting knocked down. They risk their lives out there doing what they love. It requires more physical and mental stamina than you understand, otherwise you wouldn't be dissing the sport. My daily rant and rave! Thank You for support. BOSTON BOB
I have a highly moddified 175 HP (cost me $15,000 in mods) motorcycle that is faster than any streetcar around and that is fun to ride and I consider it a sport. 120 mph and I can pull the front wheel up in the air and ride a wheelie for a half a mile. Now that is a sport!
sticking the bike over at 130 mph through a turn and hanging off the side, yes that's a sport!
you gave an example of the sport you like so I gave an example of a sport THAT I PARTICIPATE IN. It sure is fun.
