What's going on with these two auctions?

It was very curious to me why these two auctions on 1972 PR69DCAM Kennedy have such different auction prices with just eleven days apart. Forgot to snipe the second one...oops!

auction 1

auction 2

Normally I like to start auction really low, but these days it's such a gamble! Ok, to me the first coin looks slightly better, but is it worth twice as much as the second one?

The first auction looks like a case of bidder fever took over. The second is much closer to market value.

  • It seems to me that if a slab or an auction is a really WANTED item, within two or three days, the auction should bid at least up to 1/3 of its market value. Otherwise, forget about people sniping it at the last minute. People have better thing to do or just can't make it to bid: fighting the economy and pink slips, going after another rogue state, watching sports on TV, taking care of the family duties (like me), or just stare blankly into the space and hope things will be better next year (or just stare blankly, forget the next year part), and ... I am sure you can fill in the blank.

    I agree with Russ.
Once competition starts the price can go anywhere, because it's no longer about the coin it is about winning.

Auction #2 started @ 99¢ and 19 bidders determined the true market value.
Auction #1 started @ $118.99 "forcing" 3 bidders to pay a higher price.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • some things slip thru the cracks ~ the scan in #2 looks nasty, could be the reason
  • True, the second one got a lot of %&*@ on the obverse. It's just part of the business, sometimes it looks like the crap is on the holder, but it's not. Or it could be the other way around.

#2 is an ACG dealer that everybody avoids like the plague?

  • I don't like 10 day auctions...short attention span & also hate ending auctions on weekend especially on sunny Suday afternoon!!!
Plus think #1 just had interested bidder who really wanted coin.
