$9882.00 for an unopened pack of cards

Granted it was a pack of 1952 Topps in near perfect condition. (Mastro auction) Still, this must be a record for a pack of cards. There could easily be a bunch of off-center commons, worth next to nothing.
Or (another) gem mint Pafko. Some one's the gambling man!

As usual, I was out of contention with everything I was bidding on WELL before auction's end.
Anyone else?

  • was it high or low series?

i really hope theyre paying for the rarity of the unopened pack itself, because that is a huge gamble

i'ld venture the seller is smarter than the buyer.

Only if the buyer opens it.

Hey, I was just going to post on this! I believe the $9882 is before the 15% buyer's premium, and thus I believe this is the highest ever paid for an unopened pack. Rumor is an Old Judge pack sold for $10,000. It's probably a series 1 or 2 pack.

I really think that GAI is onto a really great thing in authenticating unopened packs. I've been watching them a little bit on Ebay and they always bring a good premium. $10,000 is a reasonable (high end) price for it and it can only increase in value if it's not opened.

People used to think $3,000 was insane for a mint 52 Topps Mantle. This seems even more insane, but who knows what it will be worth in 20 years?
  • Obviously this buyer was in it for the vintage gum.... CAn you imagine chewing a 50+ year old slab of Topps Gum? Just the nuances this gum has picked up from wax pack grading must be incredible...

Seriously though this might be a good investment if the buyer does not open it... As Uniship pointed out 52 Mantle's have obviously experienced meteroic rises in price so it is possible this could work out long term....(Although I would not put my $'s into something like this) But man owning a pack like that I would be way too tempted to open it....

I have seen a pack or two of 1948 Leaf unopened sell for close to this amount -- and I believe that was before GAI entered the pack grading picture...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Jeff, I agree. I could not stand the guessing of what is inside. The 52 Mantle has always been a dream card to me. I have a water cooler bottle filled with coins (silver only) to put towards the purchase.

  • the highest price paid for a pack I know sold, was a 1954 Topps cello pack with a hank aaron rookie on top, back around 1991. California dealer Tony Galovich sold it to a collector in Canada for $25,000 (US $$) not canadian $$ Back then rarely any pack sold for over $1000, much less $25K. Someday some pack will surpass that figure more than likely.
