Guess the grade - Toned Morgan... GRADE POSTED WITH COMMENTARY

And tell me why you think the earns your grade if you would - The luster on the coin is there - but it's not as overwhelming as I've seen on some others. Average I'd say.

AU58. Wear on the hair over the ear.

    MS64. It's not wear, it's roll rub.

I'll guess a high 64 due to the marks around the eye, nose, and chin. Slim chance it was gifted to 65. Very unlikely a 63. Pretty coin.
  • This may be a bit harsh but I say a 62. Looks like it has a " ring around the rosey " chatter on both sides.

    Borderline 63-64.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I'll say MS63

Ok I,ll be the disenting voice and say 63. image

oops edited to add Dog and Bob beat me to it image
  • Interesting - yes it is a PCGS MS63 - and it could be a borderline 64 in my opinion, though these days it seems that there is no border. Bytheway - I found it interesting that the coin below graded MS63 at NGC - it gives you a really good perspective on the differences in grading, although it is a CC dollar, and we've all heard the story about CC dollar's getting a 1/2 point edge from most graders - still - it looks pretty beat up for a 63!

Frank, I'm not sure on your CC Morgan if it's the difference in grading services. I think it's more the change in standards compared to years ago. Years ago you're correct it wouldn't 63. But these days from what I can tell from the image.... It doesn't really have too many marks to not 63. But it would depend how deep they are.

What I can see a few look pretty deep and that would hold it to 62 IMO. Are they pretty deep?

  • Stman - on the CC dollar the gouges were major league it was surprising to me that the coin came out with a 63 grade. The 85O coin has very light marks that are barely visible with the naked eye - To me it's definitely a borderline coin.

Thanks, yeah they look deep just wanted to make sure. See, I even wanted to give your CC Morgan a break.

I have many Gsa cc Morgans... And I'm tough on them though.

Frank- the 84-CC is a 62 that was bumped for being a CC. And I have seen many of the same in PCGS holders as well. Like it or not, both services are giving healthy bumps to CC dollars.

    Frank,
My opinion is that the '85-O was limited to 63 because of the less than stellar strike normally seen on "O" mint dollars; notice the limited detail in the hair and central breast feathers, whereas, the '84-CC, with more detail in those same areas is limited based on "hits" to the focal area. Although some probably could call the '84-CC 62, I think other factors (luster, strike, reverse) compensate for its "bagginess," and they both are properly graded.
