1963 Double Die Roosevelt? Help Me on This One

chiefbobchiefbob Posts: 1,077 ✭✭✭
After opening a 1963 proof set ( I got one "unopened" from an eBay lot), the dime looks like it has double lettering on Liberty, In God We Trust, and possibly the date. It's hard to see on the date through the cello, but the other lettering looked doubled. Is this the variety that is listed on the PCGS price guide? If not, what is it referring to? Here's a closeup (through the cello):

Although I think there may be some double dies in these years, I think what you're looking at is just some slight machine doubling. Remember that proof coins get stamped twice, so the second time the die comes down on it, if there's the slightest movement of the machine, you will get some "machine" doubling - not certain this is your case. Let's see what the pros have to say on it.

Yes, there is a DDO for the dime, however, imo, from the scan you show, it looks to be shelf or mechanical doubling, and this in not true die doubling. The lower area of doubling on your coin (would be considered the first image struck) looks to be flat and "shelf"like. As you may know, true doubling looks rounded and will have split serifs.

But like I state this is my opinion, and it is very hard to tell through cello, so you may want to show it to anacs.

There are many Doubled Die Reverses for the 1963 Proof dimes, but no Proof DDO's that I'm aware of. This one does look like machine doubling. It would not be worth the cost of slabbing.
