`03 Jeffs

Besides the bill being signed to mint the commem Jeffs, what other info is out there about any `03 normal reverse Jeffs.
Will there be both or will the `03 Monticello reverse be like a rare coin as those minted thus far are being destroyed?

  • I'd like to know more, too Cam40.

This is extra interesting to me, as I have started to collect Jeffs. Also, according to figures from the N. News, production this year of Jeffs has been (in *relative terms*) very low.

I am sure the current design will be released (and has in some places). I thought I read that the current design will be included in the Mint and Proof sets, but do not know for sure. Should be interesting for Nickel collectors.

Recieved an email from the Mint today saying the Proof Sets will be sent within the next 30 days - so whatever nickle is going to be used has been determined.

There goes the value of the current ones..

Since you do have them, how is the quality of these coins?

  • Not terribly bad, nice luster a few had nicks from getting rolled but had about 40 65fs, 3 66fs out of 3 (120 coins) rolls per mint.

Got them from the place I linked to earlier.

  • Meant to say that I think it's better to get them at the beginning of the year so fewer are circulated and rerolled.

The mints combined have reported production of some 130,000,000 nickels
through March. Demand for smaller coins is quite low and it's likely they'll
make as few as possible to maintain the needs of commerce until the new
coin is ready. It will be interesting to see how many of these make it into
circulation. This was destined to be a "low mintage" year for nickels even
before the new nickel was approved.

With moderns there tends to be an inverse correlation between availability
of specimens for collectors and mintages.

  • Regarding Jeffersons, I have just about finished going through a 2003 mint bag from Philly and Denver (8000 coins). Overall it was pretty much a waste of time. Some observations the P coins again appear nicer than the D coins. The 2003D seem higher in quality than the 2002D, which were of poor quality.

There were many coins with very deep nicks. The majority of the coins graded MS62 or MS63, and many lower. Maybe 1 to 1.5% of the coins graded MS65FS or higher (less than 100 coins). There were a handful of MS66FS and maybe just maybe 1 or 2 MS67FS.

Considering the time invested and amount of money spent, I will not be purchasing bags of Jeffersons for 2000+ years. It would have been cheaper to wait for the mint sets of just buy them certified.

Anyone have any different experiences with late date Jefferson mint sewn bags?

  • I read somewhere that the new design still has Jefferson on the obverse. The reverse will commemorate the Lewis and Clark expedition.

So there will be two designs for 2003. Often people collect the first year of a new design and I am sure the mint will pump out tens if not hundreds of millions of each so I don't expect either one to be rare.

I do hope that more people will get interested in nickels and start collecting them image
