------>>>Buffalo Lovers - Need Info On a 1934D Doubled Date<<<------

In looking through some buffalo nickels last night I found a really neat 1934D Doubled date Buff. It appears to be in at least VF condition, and it doesn't look like it's machine doubling. The doubling is very reminiscent of that which you see on Morgan dollars of the 80's. I don't have a pic of it, but I'll try to post one this weekend. I do not recall seeing reference to this before, but I hadn't paid that close attention to the entire Buffalo series - how known is this variant? Is it rare? I also found a 1913S type I Buff with a significant die clash - part of the motto "E Pluribus" appears imprinted clearly and in reverse immediately under the chin of the indian figure - I'll try to get a pic of this one as well - any info on either of these would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Frank

  • ANYONE have any clue on this one?
  • Sorry Frank! I checked my cherrypickers guide and the Redbook. Can't find anything...........Ken
  • if its just the date you may have found a new variety. I have only read about Large and Small D doubling and some reverse doubling for this year.

  • Well - crud!

    Upon closer examination, it appears that the 934 is shifted, but so is the entire profile of the indian head, although I can't see any doubling on the LIBERTY, though the coin is somewhat worn. It could very well just be machine doubling, but still, a neat find - thanks for the info guys.

    I checked Lange's and Wexler's books and no mention of obverse doubling.

    Just reverse doubling and small and large mintmarks.

    I hope you still post the pics.

    Joe.
