I know nothing about PEACE dollars???

What do you look for on the coin as far as quality indicators goes? Where are areas to look, what's good, what's bad?

  • According to the pcgs grading book the face, neck and date are the prime focal areas for marks. The eagles wing feathers and mint mark area are the main locations for marks.

Pennies make dollars, and dollars make slabs!

On the Peace$ one thing to look for is what I call milk spots or white spots streaks etc. Something to do with the way the planchets were prepared and or rinsed. Sometimes with these it's just a fact of life. That's one of the reasons you don't see big rainbow toned Peace$ like the Morgans. And why they bring big prices when a nicely toned one can be found.

BTW, I've never dipped or cleaned a coin.... but from what I understand and have heard, the white spots don't dip off. So I wouldn't advise if you see one of these to buy it and think you might be able to dip it off. Some of them aren't bad, and you can't really tell unless you look hard. But you might not be able to tell from images on the net. Hope this helps some anyway.

  • While I can't claim to be an expert, I do have a few hundred Peace dollars and a little experience.

I would only add to the first 2 posters that these tend to have weak strikes. If the reverse has stong feathers and a particularly high relief on the tail, you have a nice one.

I'd bet only 1 in 20 has a strong strike.
"Lenin is certainly right. There is no subtler or more severe means of overturning the existing basis of society(destroy capitalism) than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and it does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose."

What you have there isn`t bad. A few deep ticks but still somewhat expected and not too bad. It`s perfered not to have any for a MS. Looks like a MS63 or 64 tops. The hair between the Tiarra and face is usually " mushy " that it`s not well defined. Hard to find one that isn`t. The link to the 1927 - D is an example of one thats " mushy ". It maybe an AU but, MS ones tend to be " mushy " too.

The 1922 - D is one that is well defind and is a better then average stike.

Its a nice MS `23 D Peace Dollar
That is a D above the Eagles tailfeather? I need a Loupe to see them most times.

Its looks well struck and little contact marks.64-65?

Funny how the high-relief 1921 didnt strike up well many times and then the `22-`35 lower reliefs didnt strike up
    too sharp either overall.
Well struck gems are pricey due to this.
